Biography
De son vrai nom Hirosada Koga (古賀 寛定, Koga Hirosada), Sō Yamamura a commencé sa carrière d'acteur en 1947. Dans les années 1950, il réalise six films dont Sara no hana no toge, Kuroi ushio et Pêcheurs de crabe. En 1958, il s'essaie à la langue anglaise dans Le Barbare et la Geisha (The Barbarian and the Geisha). Yamamura est surtout connu pour sa participation au film de guerre Tora! Tora! Tora! dans lequel il interprète le rôle de l'amiral Yamamoto.Sō Yamamura a tourné dans près de 200 films entre 1947 et 1991.

In 1992, journalist Kenichiro Terasawa (Kosuke Toyohara) is writing a book about Godzilla and learns about a group of Japanese soldiers stationed on Lagos Island in the South Pacific during World War II. They were unintentionally saved from a group of American soldiers by a mysterious dinosaur known as "Godzillasaurus" in February 1944. In 1954, the island was destroyed by a hydrogen bomb test and the radiation from the bomb mutated the dinosaur into Godzilla.

The local auto plant in fictional Hadleyville, Pennsylvania, which supplied most of the town's jobs, has been closed for nine months. The former foreman Hunt Stevenson (Michael Keaton) goes to Tokyo to try to convince the Assan Motors Corporation to reopen the plant. The Japanese company agrees and, upon their arrival in the U.S., they take advantage of the desperate work force to institute many changes. The workers are not permitted a union, are paid lower wages, are moved around within the factory so that each worker learns every job, and are held to seemingly impossible standards of efficiency and quality. Adding to the strain in the relationship, the Americans find humor in the demand that they do calisthenics as a group each morning and that the Japanese executives eat their lunches with chopsticks and bathe together in the river near the factory. The workers also display a poor work ethic and lackadaisical attitude toward quality control.

In 1835, Gentetsu Nishiyama begins preaching the prophecies of Michel de Nostradame using a copy of his book, "Centuries." When Nishiyama gets persecuted by the Tokugawa Shogunate for supposed heresy, his wife and son flees with the book in hand, passing down the knowledge to future generations. Many years ago Toshio Ôki (So Yamamura), who was approaching middle age, had a relation to 16-year-old Otoko (Kaoru Yachigusa). She got pregnant, but the child was stillborn. Their relation stopped at the same time. Much later Ôki had become a famous writer, not least because of a novel about this love story. Otoko had become a famous painter. But she had never overcome the double early trauma and had become a Lesbian. Her favourite student and beloved one was the beautiful Keiko (Mariko Kaga). Twenty four years after the early love Ôki goes from Tokyo to Kyoto to meet Otoko. The meeting is polite with secret emotional shadows. Keiko makes a plan. She intends to seduce Ôki, become pregnant, bear Ôki's child and give it to Otoko. She hopes that Otoko may thereby get rid of her trauma. But she also wants to take her revenge on the man who had harmed her beloved. Secretly she gets acquainted with Ôki's son, invites him to Kyoto and seduces him. Then she calls his parents and tells that he had promised to marry her. Horrified they take the first plane to Kyoto. Meanwhile, she takes the son on boating, arranges an accident, and drowns him. It is close that she herself would also die.

The film is set at the Akitsu health spa. Just after World War II, Shusaku Kawamoto (Hiroyuki Nagato) who is suffering from tuberculosis, has come to Akitsu to die. One young girl, Shinko (Mariko Okada), refuses to let him and invigorates him on the slow path to recovery. They fall in love, and in one of his darker moments, Shusaku asks Shinko to join him in double suicide. She accepts his love but not ready to die. Neither, it transpires, is Shusaku, and slowly they part. Time passes, Shinko finds out that Shusaku is married with a child, and he seems to have no interest in her any more.
