Sam Newfield, born Samuel Neufeld, (December 6, 1899 - November 10, 1964), also known as Sherman Scott or Peter Stewart, was an American B-movie director, with over 250 feature films to his credit, and a large number of shorts, training films, industrial films, TV episodes, and pretty much anything anyone would pay him for. Because of this massive output--he would sometimes direct more than 20 films in a single year--he has been called the most prolific director of the sound era.
Many of Newfield's movies were made for PRC Pictures. This was a film production company that he operated in association with his brother Sigmund Neufeld. The films PRC produced were low-budget productions, the majority being westerns, with an occasional horror film or crime drama.

An American gambler, Forster (Clark), aspires to find acceptance amongst the British nobility after falling in love with the aristocratic Lady Susan Willens (Chance), a prominent blueblood who has actually been pursuing him. To start a relationship with her, he dumps his girlfriend (Byron), a singer in one of his nightclubs who becomes murderously jealous. He must also deal with mobsters who try to take over his nightclubs. Swindled by an upper-class con-man (Ireland) into voluntarily selling out to the mobsters anyway all his valuable assets including the gambling-casino nightclubs, a racehorse and a boxer, in order to invest in a gold-mining scam that is eventually unmasked as a fraud, he finds himself broke and in a gunfight with the mobsters, who have been deceived by a gang member with a grudge against him into thinking that they need to kill him. Non-fatally wounded in the gunfight, he is about to make an escape from his mobster pursuers when his jilted girlfriend the nightclub singer vindictively tries to kill him by hitting him with her car. He is struck a glancing blow that knocks him down, and she flees the scene. At that point, Lady Willens, with Forster's butler, arrive on the scene and come to his aid. Forster, still alive, looks up from the gutter in which he is lying and says, "Susan" with relief and gratitude but then collapses. Susan has told him that he will be alright and tells the butler, "Let's bring him home," leaving the audience to wonder, as they pick him up and carry him to Susan's car, whether he is still alive or whether he will survive his injuries.

The story involves a kindly small-town physician Doctor Lloyd Clayton (George Zucco), who attends the funeral of his twin brother, the evil magician Elwyn, whom he has secretly murdered because of the latter's deep involvement in the occult sciences. Evil Elwyn's hunchback assistant Zolarr (Dwight Frye) suspects the good doctor of doing away with his master and confronts him on this matter, but the doctor swears that he only acted in self-defense when his brother had become a danger to society. A group of seven people - an actress, a blind girl, a financier, a gangster, an heiress, a hostess, and a pilot - survive an airplane crash to find themselves deserted in an African jungle. The group come across an old hermit who has been living on the island for a while. The hermit teaches them how to survive in the jungle, though the unrepentant gangster is eaten by a crocodile. Eventually, a member of the group named Larry uses a canoe to get off the island. Larry locates a helicopter and flies back to the island, where he picks up the rest of the group. Although they offer the hermit a ride, he declines the offer, feeling he has become too attached to the jungle.
