Pierre suffers from amnesia after a war-time accident in which he might have killed a young Vietnamese girl while crash-landing his stricken plane. His nurse, Madeleine, lives with him in a low-key but potentially romantic relationship. When Pierre sees Cybèle, a young girl in distress as her obviously loveless father is dropping her off at an orphanage, he befriends her. Each of the two is lonely, childlike, and in need of a supportive friend. Eventually, he pretends to be the girl's father, which allows her to escape the locked orphanage for a day, and he shares every one of his Sundays with her for months.

George Smith (Albert Finney) is a middle age San Francisco architect in mid-life crisis and dissatisfied with the extent of his professional career, as his latest project is nothing more than a warehouse. After he and his wife Alice (Yvette Mimieux) attend a large party they go home and reassess their lives. George remembers how he used to admire Pablo Picasso so much when he was in college and suddenly proposes to his wife that they go to Europe and find Picasso. As they travel through numerous places in France and Spain they meet a number of interesting people but George's obsessive quest begins to wear on Alice. They never actually find Picasso, and in a typical Hollywood ending, they walk off into the sunset after reaffirming their love for each other.

Elisabeth is very protective of her teenage brother Paul, who has been injured in a snowball fight at school and has to rest in bed most of the time. The siblings are inseparable, living in the same room, fighting, playing secret games, and rarely leaving the house. Paul’s friend, Gerard, often drops by to stay with them. One day Elisabeth brings home Agathe to live with them. She bears a strong resemblance to Dargelos, a schoolboy whom Paul had a crush on and the same boy who injured him. Paul and Agathe become attracted to each other, causing Elisabeth to be very jealous.
