In a series of flashbacks throughout the film, Maria Altmann recalls the arrival of Nazi forces in Vienna, Austria, and the subsequent suppression of the Jewish community and the looting and pillaging conducted by the Nazis against Jewish families. Following his graduation from university in 1956, aspiring filmmaker Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) travels to London to get a job on Laurence Olivier's (Kenneth Branagh) next production. Hugh Perceval (Michael Kitchen) tells Colin that there are no jobs available, but he decides to wait for Olivier, whom he once met at a party. Olivier and his wife, Vivien Leigh (Julia Ormond), eventually show up and Vivien encourages Olivier to give Colin a job on his upcoming film The Prince and the Showgirl, starring Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams). Colin's first task is to find a suitable place for Marilyn and her husband, Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), to stay at while they are in England. The press find out about the house, but Colin reveals he secured a second house just in case, impressing Olivier and Marilyn's publicist, Arthur P. Jacobs (Toby Jones).

Angleterre, XIX siècle. David Copperfield est venu au monde après la mort de son père. Sa mère décide de se remarier à Murdstone, un homme vil et cruel. De nouveau enceinte, celle-ci décède en couches laissant David seul face à son beau-père qui le persécute et l'envoie travailler dans un entrepôt. Le petit garçon est mis en pension chez la famille Micawber dont il se fera des amis. Mais quand ceux-ci quittent Londres, il décide de partir pour Douvres, seul endroit où il lui reste un membre de sa famille, sa tante Betsey Trotwood. Murdstone est averti de la fuite du jeune Copperfield et tente de le récupérer auprès de Mrs. Trotwood mais elle décidera de le garder et de l'élever. Reprenant ses études, il va alors loger chez Mr. Wickfield qui a une fille, Agnès, amoureuse de David.

Suki, her cowardly brother Linus, and their conceited cousin Fleck are all lion cubs. When two rogue lions called Dark and Harry known as "The Wanderers" attack and while the lionesses help, they kill Fleck's mother leaving him an orphan. Suki and Linus decide to go exploring and find out how the Wanderers got across the river. Their mother Macheeba thought it impossible for the Wanderers to get across as there are Nile crocodiles in the river. Suki and Linus find a dead tree making a bridge, which is probably how the Wanderers got across. Elephants destroy the bridge leaving the cubs (and the Wanderers) trapped. When they meet Dark, he saves them from a pack of spotted hyenas, and Suki develops a crush on him. She and Linus have no choice but to swim across the river, and they successfully do.
