Stephen Harold Halliwell (born 21 March 1954 in Bury, Lancashire, England) is an English actor best known for his part in ITV's Emmerdale as smallholder Zak Dingle, which he has played since 1994.
Steve was born in Bury, Lancashire, England) to Fred & Jenny Halliwell, Steve has an older brother Clive who is two years older than him.
Halliwell was an apprentice engineer and had a number of jobs mainly in cotton and paper mills before drama training at the Mountview Theatre School. He was a founder member of the Interchange Theatre in Bury. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, he featured in a number of UK television shows, including Here I Stand, Threads, Cracker, Crown Court, G.B.H. and Coronation Street. He released his autobiography in 2014 called If The Cap Fits: My Rocky Road to Emmerdale.

Young Sheffield residents Ruth Beckett (Karen Meagher) and Jimmy Kemp (Reece Dinsdale) decide to marry due to an unplanned pregnancy. Meanwhile, as tensions between the US and the Soviet Union over Iran escalate, the Home Office directs Sheffield City Council to assemble an emergency operations team, which establishes itself in a makeshift bomb shelter in the basement of the Town Hall. After an ignored US ultimatum to the Soviets results in a brief tactical nuclear skirmish, Britain is gripped by fear, with looting and rioting erupting. "Known subversives" (including peace activists and some trade unionists) are arrested and interned under the Emergency Powers Act.
