Ted Kotcheff (born April 7, 1931), sometimes credited as William Kotcheff or William T. Kotcheff, is a Canadian film and television director, who is well known for his work on several high-profile British television productions and as a director of films such as the Australian classic Wake in Fright and such Hollywood successes as First Blood, Uncommon Valor, Weekend at Bernie's and North Dallas Forty.

Not Quite Hollywood documents the revival of Australian cinema during the Australian New Wave of the 1970s and '80s through B-movies including Alvin Purple, Barry McKenzie Holds His Own, Dead-End Drive In, Long Weekend, Mad Max, The Man from Hong Kong, Patrick, Razorback, Road Games, Stork and Turkey Shoot. From 1971 through to the late 1980s, Australian directors began to take advantage of the newly introduced R-rating which allowed more on-screen nudity, sex and violence for audiences restricted to age 18 and over. "Ozploitation"—writer-director Mark Hartley's own portmanteau of "Australian exploitation"—was a subgenre of the New Wave which accounted for the critically panned "gross-out comedies, sex romps, action and road movies, teen films, westerns, thrillers and horror films" of the era, commonly overlooked in Australia's "official film history". The film addresses three main categories of "Ozploitation" films: sex, horror and action.

Larry Wilson (McCarthy) and Richard Parker (Silverman) are two low-level financial employees at an insurance corporation in New York City. While going over actuarial reports, Richard discovers mismatched payments between December 1987 and June 1988. Richard and Larry take their findings to the CEO, Bernie Lomax (Terry Kiser), who commends them for discovering insurance fraud and invites them to his Hamptons island beach house for the Labor Day weekend. Unbeknownst to Larry and Richard, Bernie is behind the fraud. Nervously meeting with his mob partners Vito and Marty, Bernie asks to have Larry and Richard killed and arrange it to look like a murder-suicide. However, after Bernie leaves, the gangsters decide Bernie has been attracting too much attention with his grabbiness as well as his fooling around with Vito's girlfriend, Tina, and order that he be killed instead.

Sam Field (Eric McCormack) is a high-powered businessman and scion of a rich industrialist family with his own factory. The film tells the story of Jon Aldrich (Tom Selleck), a successful stockbroker who is living a good life with a wife and kids until he comes across his elderly father who has major dementia and, as a result of it, wreaks all kinds of havoc on his life including his own, which among all of them involves accidentally burning down his own house.
