Mika passe ses vacances d'été au haras de Kaltenbach chez sa grand-mère. Il est proche de la faillite à cause de la concurrence d'un autre centre équestre : L'installation moderne menace d'attirer progressivement tous les apprentis cavaliers. Sa participation à un tournoi pourrait sauver le haras. Et ainsi elle commence à s'entraîner avec son cheval Whisper pour participer à une compétition. Ce n'est qu'avec une victoire qu'elle peut éviter la banqueroute. Au cours des préparatifs du tournoi, Whisper et Mika découvrent leur intérêt pour le sexe opposé. Pour l'étalon c'est une jument grise fugitive, pour Mika le jeune Milan, qui aide Mika à l'entraînement, après l'avoir aidé à ramener la jument grise.

Retired vet Amandus (Dieter Hallervorden) suffers from Alzheimer's disease. A speech he holds at his wife Margarete's funeral reveals his deteriorating mental state. In a rural village in a remote valley in Austria at the beginning of the 20th century a land-owning farmer is found dead. The farmer was childless and without further family and, to the surprise of all, willed his worldly goods, including his farm, to his seven farmhands in equal shares. Suddenly seven have-nots have become land-owners. The existing power structure is deeply disturbed and the developments are commonly perceived as threatening the existing world order. Efforts are put into place to undo this wrong. The events triggered by the troubles originating both from within the group of inheritors and from the outside make up the story line of this movie. A sub plot is the mystery of the farmer's motivation for his unusual last will and testament. He was considered to be a hard man with a mean streak, and some of his land-owning peers don't rule out he did it to spite them, as a slap in their face after his death. However, one of the farm hands detects that the story might be more complicated.

Bastian Balthazar Bux (Barret Oliver), a shy and friendless bibliophile child, hides in a bookstore, interrupting the grumpy bookseller, Mr. Coreander (Thomas Hill). Bastian asks about one of the books he sees, but Mr. Coreander advises against it; despite which, Bastian seizes the book, leaving a note promising to return it, and hides in the school's attic to read. The book describes the world of Fantasia threatened by a force called "The Nothing"; where the Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach) who rules over Fantasia has fallen ill, and has summoned Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) to discover the cure. Atreyu is therefore given the AURYN. As Atreyu sets out, the Nothing summons Gmork (voiced by Alan Oppenheimer), a werewolf, to kill Atreyu.
