Tom Jordan Murphy (15 January 1968 – 6 October 2007) was an Irish theatre and film actor best known for his 1998 Tony Award winning performance in The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

In 1996, Murphy created the role of Ray Dooley in The Beauty Queen of Leenane. This production started life at the Town Hall Theatre, Galway, directed by Garry Hynes and presented in association with the Druid Theatre Company. It also played at Dublin's Gaiety Theatre and in London's West End. In 1998, the play transferred to off-Broadway and later made its Broadway debut at the Walter Kerr Theater. Nominated for six Tony Awards in total, the production won four including the Best Featured Actor in a Play award for Murphy. New York Times theater critic, Ben Brantley, praised Murphy for his role in the play at the time, "Mr. Murphy offers comic relief without ever presenting it as such...His, more than any other character, must embody the provincial society beyond the women's home, and Ray's irritable restlessness is eloquent on the subject".

Murphy made his professional acting debut playing the Artful Dodger in Noel Pearson's production of Oliver! in 1980 aged 12. During his career he performed in theatres all over Ireland and the UK including the Abbey Theatre, the Gate Theatre and Royal Court Theatre in London (in Shining City by Conor McPherson). Murphy made his feature film breakthrough with 2004's Adam & Paul, co-starring (and written by) Mark O'Halloran, in which he played a Dublin drug addict and junkie. Variety Magazine, which reviewed the movie, wrote that Murphy's performance "steals the show."

Murphy also appeared in a number of other Irish films, including Intermission, Michael Collins, The General and Man About Dog. He also played the part of Seamie in the popular RTÉ television drama series Pure Mule.

Adam and Paul are childhood friends who as adults have withered into two hopeless, desperate addicts, tied together by habit and necessity. The film is a stylised, downbeat comedy, following the pair through a single day, which, like every other, is devoted to scrounging and robbing money to buy heroin.

The film's main characters are Mo Chara, Scud Murphy and Cereberal Paulsy, all from West Belfast. They have an interest in dog racing, which the narrator, Mo Chara, informs us, is very important in Ireland. In 1982, Johnny and Sarah Sullivan and their daughters Christy and Ariel enter the United States on a tourist visa via Canada, where Johnny was working as an actor. The family settles in New York City, in a rundown Hell's Kitchen tenement occupied by drug addicts, transvestites, and a reclusive Nigerian artist/photographer named Mateo Kuamey. Hanging over the family is the death of their five-year-old son Frankie, who died from a brain tumor. The devout Roman Catholic Johnny questions God and has lost any ability to feel true emotions, which has affected his relationship with his family. Christy believes she has been granted three wishes by her dead brother, which she only uses at times of near-dire consequences for the family as they try to survive in New York.

Set in 18th century Ireland, the story follows the exploits of two financially destitute young bachelors, Garrett Byrne and James Strang. Both being younger sons, and therefore not eligible to inherit titles and estates, they become members of an infamous society known as the 'Abduction Club', whose main aim is to woo and then abduct wealthy heiresses in order to marry them (therefore providing themselves with financial security). The men decide to set their sights on the beautiful yet feisty Kennedy sisters, Catherine and Anne, but are unprepared for the negative reaction they are to receive, and they soon find themselves on the run across the glorious Irish countryside (with the sisters in tow) from Anne's cold-hearted admirer, John Power, who doesn't take kindly to the news of their kidnapping, and with the help of the embittered Attorney General Lord Fermoy, implicates Byrne and Strang in the murder of a Redcoat soldier.
