Ursula Werner is a German actress born September 28, 1943 in Eberswalde, Germany. She grew up in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin. After studying at the Staatlichen Schauspielschule Berlin (Berlin State Drama College), she obtained her first roles in the Halle Opera House, and in the Berlin cabaret "Die Distel". From 1974 to 2009 Werner was a permanent member of the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in Berlin. She also makes guest appearances on the Gorki stage. She is particularly remembered for her role of Dr. Unglaube in the 1977 film Ein irrer Duft von frischem Heu (A Terrific Scent of Fresh Hay). From 2001 to 2007 she played a permanent secondary character in the Schloss Einstein series. Following several minor roles in film and on TV, she took the leading role for Andreas Dresen's Wolke 9 where she played the part of a woman in her late sixties who leaves her older husband for an even older man. The film attempts to show that even in advanced years, love and sex simply do not just stop. For this unusual role, Werner received the 2009 German Film Award (Lola) for the best female leading role.

Werner lives in Berlin. Her next film, Wintervater, where she plays the role of Lene, is in post-production and will be released in 2011.

It is based on an unpublished novel, Ice Ages, by German author Hannelore Hippe. (It has since been published.) She was inspired by reports in the late 1980s of the discovery of the half-burned body of a young woman near Bergen, and there was speculation as to her identity. This was just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification of Germany.

The 44-year-old family man Frank Lange (Milan Peschel) has a proper job and lives with his wife Simone (Steffi Kühnert) and their children Lilly (Talisa Lilli Lemke) and Mika (Mika Seidel) in a modern serial house when he learns he suffers with an inoperable brain tumour and has only but a short time left. Supported by his family he uses an iPod to keep daily records of his decline. Radiation therapy and chemical treatment take their toll on him. Eventually he grows too weak to leave the house and has hallucinations during which his tumour seems to appear as a vain actor in a late-night talk show hosted by Germany's established TV presenter Harald Schmidt. His children are increasingly overstrained and so is his wife Simone. The tumour deprives Frank from memory, orientational ability and even control of basic body functions. Fighting the pain with always stronger doses of morphium he loses his true personality and finally his speech. Having become a nursing case of the highest degree he dies at last in his home amidst his family. When actually everybody is lost for words, his daughter Lilly, an ambitious diver, utters: "I have to attend training".
