The film opens with the historic independence of Bangladesh and after the third Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Starving, two kids named Bikram and Bala are taken in by a man named Lateef (Pankaj Tripathi), who offers them to work for him, and illegally smuggle guns to other men. He cares for them until one day an army officer that they give guns to, tells Lateef to leave one of the two boys behind to work as his child sex slave or otherwise he'll take Lateef's daughter. Bikram hears this and tells Lateef that he'll stay behind in order to save Bala, his friend. Bala then comes back to save Bikram and kills the army officer. The two boys then run away, as Lateef is killed by the police.

In a remote riverside a plaque was accidentally discovered from a burial. It reveals that something had happened to this person in the hands of the British. The people assumed the he was a freedom fighter, hence a martyr and proper recognition should be given to him. The government declared to erect a statue in honour of the great martyr as an attempt gain political advantage. But there was no reference, not even a photograph which can form the basis of the statue. The children of the martyr's family try to figure out their ancestor's face by looking through the hereditary characteristics that are passed onto genetically. They examine the faces of different generations to discover similarity and commonality to create the 'probable' person. But gradually they realized that a real man is found not in his appearance but in his works, so they try to discover and evaluate his deeds.

Sridhar Ranjan, a social activist, has gone missing from Majuli, Assam. After almost 7 years, when as per law he is about to be officially declared dead, his old journalist friend Abhijit Shandilya (Sanjay Suri) goes in search of Sridhar from Mumbai to Majuli. In Majuli, Abhijit finds himself to be a stranger of sorts in a place that’s infested with terrorists and where both the police and the terrorists seem to be suspicious of him. He befriends with his local guide Sudakshina ( Bidita Bag). Sudakshina apparently also was the guide for Sridhar when he came to Majuli initially. She however seems to be living with her own fears and stops short of getting close to Abhijit whenever an occasion comes up. The rest of the story revoles around Abhijit trying solve the mystery behind the disappearance of Sridhar.
