Vincente Minnelli (February 28, 1903 – July 25, 1986) was an American stage director and film director, famous for directing such classic movie musicals as Meet Me in St. Louis, The Band Wagon, and An American in Paris. In addition to having directed some of the most famous and well-remembered musicals of his time, Minnelli made many comedies and melodramas. He was married to Judy Garland from 1945 until 1951; they were the parents of Liza Minnelli.

Au début des années 1940, Arthur Freed lui propose de le rejoindre à la MGM. Minnelli trouve alors ternes et statiques les mises en scène hollywoodiennes et entreprend de rendre dans ses films l'atmosphère des artistes qui l'avaient touché, les fauves, les impressionnistes et les surréalistes. Les films de Minnelli sont hauts en couleurs et son habileté à mêler plusieurs styles le rend célèbre.
Il met en scène de nombreuses comédies musicales, réputées pour leurs scènes oniriques et l'intégration de scènes de ballet ou de chansons en osmose avec le déroulement de l'histoire.
Il écrit ses mémoires, Tous en scène (I Remember it Well) dont le titre anglais est une référence à une chanson de Gigi, et le titre français celui de l'un de ses grands succès, Tous en scène (The Band Wagon), comédie musicale sur le thème de l'entertainement (distraction, spectacle) hollywoodien et la vie de scène.

Biography
Vincente Minnelli naît dans une famille de gens du spectacle. Son père, Vincent Charles Minnelli, est le fils d'un patriote sicilien pourchassé pour ses activités lors du soulèvement de Palerme en 1848. Vincent Charles dirigeait le Minnelli Brothers' Tent Theatre, tandis que sa mère, Marie Émilie Odile Lebeau, parisienne, avait des ancêtres canadiens français avec probablement des racines indiennes (Anishinaabe).C'est grâce à cet environnement que le jeune Vincente entre dans le monde du spectacle dès l'âge de trois ans.

At the behest of her ultra-conservative fiancé Warren, scatterbrained five-pack-a-day chain smoker and clairvoyant Daisy Gamble attends a class taught by psychiatrist Marc Chabot for help in kicking her habit. While undergoing hypnosis, it is discovered she is the reincarnation of Lady Melinda Winifred Waine Tentrees, a seductive 18th century coquette who was born the illegitimate daughter of a kitchen maid. She acquired the paternity records of the children housed in the orphanage where her mother worked and used the information to blackmail their wealthy fathers. Laura Reynolds (Taylor) is a free-spirited, unwed single mother living with her young son Danny (Morgan Mason) in an isolated California beach house. She makes a modest living as an artist and home-schools her son out of concern that he will be compelled to follow stifling conventional social norms in a regular school. Danny has gotten into some trouble with the law through two minor incidents, which are in his mother's eyes innocent expressions of his natural curiosity and conscience rather than delinquency. Now with a third incident a judge (Torin Thatcher) orders her to send the boy to an Episcopal boarding school where Dr. Edward Hewitt (Burton) is headmaster, and his wife Claire (Eva Marie Saint) teaches. Set in turn-of-the-20th century Paris, the film opens with Honoré Lachaille (Maurice Chevalier) among high society in the Bois de Boulogne. A charming old roué, he cynically remarks that "Like everywhere else, most people in Paris get married, but not all. There are some who will not marry, and some who do not marry. But in Paris, those who will not marry are usually men, and those who do not marry are usually women." So marriage is not the only option for wealthy young bon vivants like his nephew Gaston (Louis Jourdan), who is bored with life. In post-WWII Hong Kong, unhappily married Carol (Eleanor Parker) has an affair with a married man, Paul (Jean Pierre Aumont). Her physician husband Walter (Bill Travers) discovers it and presents her with a choice: travel with him to a remote mainland village (where he will fight a cholera epidemic) or face the scandal of a very public divorce.
