Virginia Dale (July 1, 1917 – October 3, 1994) was an American actress and dancer.

She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. While working as one of the dancing Paxton Sisters in New York City, she was discovered by Darryl F. Zanuck who signed her to a contract with 20th Century Fox. She appeared in a number of movies in the late 1930s and 1940s, including Holiday Inn (1942), and became particularly associated with musicals. In the 1950s, she worked mainly in television series such as The Adventures of Kit Carson (1951–1952), Highway Patrol (1957), and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (1957–1958). She left the movie business in 1958, but returned to acting for a few films in the 1980s. She died in Burbank, California.

Biography

Elle nait à Charlotte en Caroline du Nord en 1917. Alors qu'elle se produit comme danseuse au sein du groupe Paxton Sisters à New York, elle est remarquée par le producteur Darryl F. Zanuck qui lui fait signer un contrat avec la 20th Century Fox.

Elle débute au cinéma en 1938 dans la comédie musicale No Time to Marry d'Harry Lachman avec pour partenaires Richard Arlen, Mary Astor et Lionel Stander. Après un petit rôle dans la comédie romantique Start Cheering d'Albert S. Rogell, elle obtient en 1939 l'un des rôles principaux du film policier Death of a Champion de Robert Florey avec Lynne Overman pour partenaire. Dans la comédie La Ronde des pantins (Idiot’s Delight) de Clarence Brown, elle est l'une des danseuses de la troupe de Clark Gable.

Elle est ensuite à l'affiche de la comédie All Women Have Secrets de Kurt Neumann puis d'un second film policier réalisé par Florey, Parole Fixer . Elle participe ensuite à la comédie Love Thy Neighbor de H. Bruce Humberstone et apparaît dans plusieurs films se déroulant dans l'univers du monde du spectacle, comme Dancing on a Dime de Joseph Santley, Love Thy Neighbor de Mark Sandrich, Las Vegas Nights de Ralph Murphy ou Vedette à tout prix (Kiss the Boys Goodbye) de Victor Schertzinger.

En 1942, elle joue l'un des principaux rôles de la comédie musicale L'amour chante et danse (Holiday Inn) de Mark Sandrich aux côtés de Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire et Marjorie Reynolds.

Après un intermède causé par la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle reprend le chemin des studios et joue dans des films à petits budgets. Elle apparaît en 1947 dans deux films noirs, Fall Guy de Reginald Le Borg et Dragnet de Leslie Goodwins. Jack Conway la filme en réceptionniste d'Adolphe Menjou dans la comédie Marchands d'illusions (The Hucksters). En 1949, elle tourne dans le film policier Docks of New Orleans , la seconde réalisation des six films consacrés au détective Charlie Chan incarné par Roland Winters. Elle joue ensuite pour Lesley Selander dans la comédie Strike It Rich aux côtés de Bonita Granville, Rod Cameron et Don Castle .

Dans les années 1950, elle travaille principalement pour la télévision. Elle apparaît dans des épisodes de diverses séries télévisées avant de se retirer en 1958. Elle revient au début des années 1980 pour jouer quelques rôles secondaires.

Elle décède en 1994 à Burbank en Californie et est enterrée au cimetière Forest Lawn d'Hollywood Hills à Los Angeles.

Singing cowboy Gene Autry (Gene Autry) is the foreman of the Circle R Ranch, which has been in the Adams family for generations. Harry Van (Clark Gable), an American World War I veteran, tries to reenter show biz and ends up in a faltering mentalist show with an inept, aging alcoholic, Madame Zuleika (Laura Hope Crews, who also appeared in Gone with the Wind as Aunt Pittypat).
