Walter Connolly (April 8, 1887 – May 28, 1940) was an American character actor who appeared in almost fifty films between 1914 and 1939. His best known film is It Happened One Night.

Au milieu du XIX siècle, au bord du Mississippi, le jeune Huckleberry Finn vit chez la veuve Douglas et sa sœur, Miss Watson. Il a du mal à se tenir comme un gentleman, préférant l'école buissonnière et marcher pieds nus. Une nuit, Pap Finn, le père de Huck, se rend chez M Douglas et lui demande 800 dollars pour qu'elle puisse garder son fils. Entendant cela, Huck décide de partir pour qu'elle n'ait pas à payer, mais il est rattrapé par son père qui l'enferme dans une cabane. Le garçon réussit à s'enfuir, et laisse des indices suggérant qu'il aurait été tué et jeté dans le fleuve. Il remonte le fleuve et, quelque temps après, rencontre son ami Jim, un esclave de M Douglas qui s'est enfui car elle avait prévu de le vendre pour avoir assez d'argent pour garder Huck. À leur insu, les indices laissés par Huck et la disparition de Jim font croire aux autorités que c'est Jim le coupable du meurtre. Jim essaye de gagner un État non esclavagiste et de rejoindre sa femme, et Huck décide de l'aider. Plus en amont ils rencontrent le "King" et le "Duke", qui ont été débarqués d'un bateau pour avoir escroqués des passagers.

Jenny Swanson (Blondell) is a waitress in a small college town whose goal is to go to Paris. Jenny rationalizes a little gold-digging and blackmail to achieve her goal. She tries to explain this to the new professor Ronald Brooke (Douglas), and Brooke in turn tries to dissuade her from such schemes, telling her that "good girls go to Paris, too". When her first attempt at blackmailing ends with an attack of conscience and the necessity of leaving town. Instead of returning to her hometown as advised by Brooke, of whom she has grown fond, Jenny heads for New York. Brooke is also bound for New York where he is to marry the wealthy Sylvia Brand (Joan Perry).

William Jordan (Howard) is befriended by the man who sent him to prison on a manslaughter charge, former DA now prison warden Matthews (Connolly). In order to give Jordan the opportunity to rehabilitate himself Matthews allows him to work as chauffeur to his daughter Elizabeth (Parker), though he's a bit uncomfortable when Elizabeth falls in love with the young convict. All of this extra effort goes out the window when Jordan, adhering to the "criminal code" of never snitching on a fellow con, allows himself to be implicated in the murder of another convict. Jordan is saved from the death penalty by a last-minute confession of his hard-bitten but honorable cellmate.
