Wensley Pithey (21 June 1914 – 10 November 1993) was a South African-born character actor who had a long stage and film career in England.
Pithey was born in Cape Town, South Africa. A graduate of the University of Cape Town where he studied music and drama, he travelled to Britain in 1947. He appeared in various Shakespearean roles in his long career (memorably as Sir Toby Belch) as well as appearing in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie. He also directed and produced plays in the West End and appeared in a range of roles on television including the 1976 drama Edward and Mrs Simpson (as Winston Churchill) as well as Special Branch and Poldark. His British television appearances included Danger Man (1961) among others.

Palin plays Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford professor on holiday in the Swiss Alps in 1861. There he meets the American Caroline Hartley (Connie Booth) and her 18-year-old ward Elinor (Trini Alvarado). Ashby is drawn to them both, particularly Elinor, but is rather surprised when they arrive in Oxford and rent a house. A workhouse in Dunstable, England is visited by the wealthy governors who fund it. While a sumptuous banquet is held for them, the barefoot orphan boys who work there are being served their daily gruel. They dream of enjoying the same "Food, Glorious Food" as their masters. While eating, some boys draw straws to see who will ask for more to eat, and the job falls to a boy named Oliver Twist. He goes up to Bumble and Widow Corney, who run the workhouse and serve the gruel, and asks for more. Enraged, Bumble takes Oliver to the governors to see what to do with him ("Oliver!"). A decision is made to have Oliver sold into service. Bumble parades Oliver through the snow, trying to sell him to the highest bidder ("Boy for Sale"). Oliver is sold to an undertaker named Mr. Sowerberry, who intends to use him as a mourner for children's funerals. After his first funeral, Noah Claypole, Sowerberry's apprentice, insults Oliver's mother. Oliver attacks Noah in fury and Sowerberry forces him into a coffin while Noah fetches Bumble. Oliver is too angry to be intimidated by Bumble, who places the blame on not keeping Oliver on a diet of gruel, instead of meat, which made him strong. Oliver is thrown into the cellar as further punishment. Alone in the dark with a roomful of empty coffins, Oliver wonders ("Where is Love?"). While clutching the window grate, Oliver pushes it open and escapes.

The girls burn their school to the ground, and subsequently are found guilty at the Old Bailey. An unmarried vicar, the Reverend Howard Phillips (Anthony Quayle), newly arrived in the parish, attempts to force local 19-year-old thug and petty criminal Larry Thompson (Andrew Ray) to face up to his responsibilities to Mary Williams (Leigh Madison), the naive young girl he has impregnated. Tempers are lost, a struggle ensues, and in retaliation Thompson accuses Phillips of 'interfering' with him. The episode is witnessed by Hester Peters (Sarah Churchill), the daughter of the parish’s previous clergyman, who had become infatuated with the athletic and handsome new vicar. However, having earlier seen a young girl (Mary) leaving the vicarage late one night (she had sought the vicar's advice about her pregnancy), Hester jumps to the conclusion the two are romantically linked and, 'a fury like a woman scorned', refuses to contradict Thompson's palpably false accusation. Mary is killed shortly afterwards; discovering Thompson kissing another girl at a bus shelter, she blindly flees across the road into the path of a car.

Tom Yately, just released from prison, is determined to start a new life and he gets a job as a driver at Hawletts, a haulage company that transports loads of ballast gravel from a nearby quarry. The truck-drivers are offered bonuses by the agent Cartley for delivering their loads at dangerously high speeds along narrow roads.
