Il devient rapidement populaire en France où il se produit régulièrement, puis enchaîne les albums, diversifiant et complexifiant sa musique, et affinant son style. Ses premiers albums sortent sous le nom de Palace Brothers, Palace Music ou simplement Palace.
Après Lost blues and other songs en 1997, il publie sous son vrai nom – Will Oldham – l'album Joya (1998), puis sous le pseudonyme Bonnie 'Prince' Billy l'album suivant : I See a Darkness (1999). Il a notamment été accompagné par le guitariste David Pajo alias Papa M, ses frères Ned et Paul Oldham. Il est proche de la harpiste Joanna Newsom, et du jeune cinéaste Harmony Korine.
Ces dernières années, il a multiplié les collaborations musicales tous azimuts : le rappeur Sage Francis, le groupe de dark folk Current 93, le guitariste Matt Sweeney, avec le chanteur folk suédois Nicolai Dunger, avec le groupe de post-rock Tortoise.
En 2004, il a ré-enregistré un bon nombre de ses chansons de l'époque Palace avec des orchestrations très riches et avec des musiciens country de Nashville. Parfois méconnaissables, les chansons étiques et névrosées des années 90 sont métamorphosées dans ce disque presque sautillant : "Bonnie 'Prince' Billy sings greatest Palace music"

Biography
Très jeune, il découvre le théâtre, le cinéma et la musique punk et rock de son époque. Il écrit très tôt des pièces de théâtre, et monte sur les planches. Sa vie bascule à l'adolescence lorsqu'il interprète l'un des rôles principaux dans Matewan, de John Sayles (1987). Chapter 13 The chapter initially starts with Sylvester and Twan in Sylvester's car though it is not clear at first where they are going. When Sylvester tells Twan to be on his best behavior and reminds Twan about how he got sent to jail, Twan says it "was because of Roxanne and that bitch Tina", which Sylvester remembers his wife mentioning their names on chapter five. The scene soon cuts to Rosie the nosy neighbor and her husband Randolph (played by R. Kelly), who argue over Rosie spying on other neighbors. The argument ends when the scene cuts back to Sylvester explaining to Twan that he has to collect money from someone, he tells Twan to leave the car in drive and be on the lookout and enters a restaurant. An hour goes by with no sign of Sylvester.

The film opens on television footage of an ice dancer - a recurring motif in the film - before cutting away to Julien, a young man with untreated schizophrenia. It was 1920 in the southwest West Virginia coal fields, and, as the narrator recalls, "things were tough." In response to efforts by miners to organize into a labor union, the Stone Mountain Coal Company announces it will cut the pay miners receive, and will be importing replacement workers into town to replace those who join the union. The new workers are African Americans from Alabama and are coming in on the train, but the train is stopped outside town and the black men are told to get off. Derided as "scabs", they are then attacked by the local miners, but manage to get back on the train and continue their journey.

Cheyenne is a wealthy former rock star, now bored and jaded in his 20-year retirement in Dublin. He retired after two of his teenaged fans committed suicide.
