William Conrad (September 27, 1920 – February 11, 1994) was an American actor, producer and director whose career spanned five decades in radio, film and television.
A radio writer and actor, he moved to Hollywood, California, after his World War II service and played a series of character roles in films beginning with the quintessential film noir, The Killers (1946). He created the role of Marshal Matt Dillon for the popular radio series Gunsmoke (1952–1961), and narrated the television adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (1959–1964) and The Fugitive (1963–1967).
Finding fewer on-screen roles in the 1950s, he changed from actor to producer-director with television work, narration, and a series of Warner Bros. films in the 1960s. Conrad found stardom as a detective in the TV series Cannon (1971–1976) and Nero Wolfe (1981), and as a district attorney in the legal drama Jake and the Fatman (1987–1992).

Né le 27 septembre 1920 à Louisville (Kentucky), Conrad débuta au cinéma dans Les Tueurs (The Killers), le classique de Robert Siodmak, en 1946, et interpréta des rôles de policier, de shérif voire de journaliste dans plusieurs films avant de collaborer régulièrement à la série radiophonique Escape, en 1950, et d’apparaître dans plusieurs séries télé dont Bat Masterson, Have Gun Will Travel, High Chaparral et plus tard Opération Vol, L’Homme qui tombe à pic (dans son propre rôle) et Arabesque. Mais il est également producteur et réalisateur, œuvrant notamment à la réussite de Gunsmoke, L’Homme à la carabine ou Naked City dans les années 1950. Décédé en 1994, l’acteur fut également le protagoniste de trois séries plus connues: la première qui a duré cinq ans, Cannon; la deuxième annulée au bout de quelques épisodes, Nero Wolfe; la troisième plus populaire, La Loi est la Loi (Jake and the Fatman), avec Joe Penny (acteur de Riptide).Best films

Bill et Myrtle Moon, un couple âgé, patrons d'une épicerie-station-service d'un village de Caroline du Sud, sont braqués et froidement abattus par Rudolph Tyner, un petit voyou un peu retardé. Celui-ci, qui a déjà un casier judiciaire, est immédiatement appréhendé par la police qui le trouve en possession d'une petite somme d'argent correspondant à la recette de l'épicerie et d'une cartouche de fusil. Son avocat plaide la culpabilité, Tyner est condamné à la chaise électrique, mais d'appel en appel, sa peine est constamment reportée (il n'y a pas eu d'exécution capitale depuis vingt ans en Caroline du Sud). Excédé par cette procédure qui s'éternise alors qu'il attendait une exécution exemplaire, Tony Cimo, le fils adoptif de Bill Moon, d'abord hostile aux suggestions d'auto-justice qui lui sont faites par un adepte, en vient à les accepter. Par la bande, il entre en contact téléphonique avec Lamar Sands, un prisonnier chargé de la maintenance du pénitencier où est incarcéré Tyner. Sands, moyennant finances, accepte de liquider Tyner et, après de vaines tentatives d'empoisonnement, lui fait exploser la tête avec un poste de radio bidouillé avec une charge de plastic. La police découvre dans l'atelier de la prison l'enregistrement de l'un des entretiens téléphoniques de Sands avec Tony. Ce dernier est rapidement arrêté et condamné à une réclusion de 5 ans pour complicité de meurtre, plus 8 pour préméditation et usage d'explosif, et encore 8 pour non-dénonciation d'acte criminel, mais n'en purgera finalement que 3. À la suite de cette affaire, la Caroline du Sud rétablit la peine capitale.

In the opening scene, John Hay Forrest (George Gaynes), noted scientist and cheesemaker, dies in a single-vehicle car accident (represented by the car wreck scene from Keeper of the Flame). In the next scene, private investigator Rigby Reardon (Steve Martin) is reading a newspaper when Forrest's daughter, Juliet (Rachel Ward), enters his office and faints when the paper's headline reminds her of her father's death. Upon coming to, she hires Rigby to investigate the death, which she thinks was murder. In Dr. Forrest's lab, Rigby finds two lists, one titled "Friends of Carlotta" and the other "Enemies of Carlotta", as well as an affectionately autographed photo of singer Kitty Collins, whose name appears on one of the lists. His search is interrupted by a man posing as an exterminator (Alan Ladd, in This Gun for Hire), who shoots Rigby in the arm and frisks the lists from the seemingly dead investigator.

In 1987, NASA astronaut Captain William "Buck" Rogers is piloting the space shuttle Ranger 3 when he flies into an unexpected space phenomenon and is frozen for 504 years. In the year 2491, his shuttle is found drifting in space by the alien ship Draconia, which is headed to Earth for a trade conference, under the command of Princess Ardala and her aide de camp, Kane, a former native of Earth. Professor Andrew Patterson (Glenn Ford) returns to his alma mater, the College of St. George in San Francisco, for the initiation of a new member into a secret society, the Brotherhood of the Bell. The man who initiated Patterson 22 years earlier, financier Chad Harmon (Dean Jagger), is presiding at the initiation. Harmon gives him an address and instructs Patterson to go there to receive an assignment from the society; Patterson has been selected to prevent Dr. Konstantin Horvathy (Eduard Franz) from accepting a deanship at a college of linguistics. The Brotherhood wants this post for one of their own. Patterson is given dossiers of people who helped Horvathy defect to the United States, and he is to threaten to reveal these to the government of Horvathy's homeland if Horvathy accepts the new post. Against Brotherhood policy, Patterson consults Harmon about the legality and ethics of his assignment. Harmon tells Patterson to do it and be grateful that more is not asked of him.

In the late 1960s, astronauts training in an Apollo simulator have their session ended early. They grumble about it, but their commander, Chiz (Robert Duvall), knows the reason for the abort: the Pilgrim Program. The Russians will be sending a moon landing mission up in four weeks. The Americans had a secret alternate plan to the Apollo program (Pilgrim) in case this happened. One man would be sent to the moon in a one-way rocket, a modified Project Gemini craft. He would stay on the moon for a few months in a shelter pod launched and landed before him. Later, a manned Apollo mission would come to retrieve him.

Military Intelligence officer and former policeman Lt. Col. Daniel Kiley (Fonda) and his pilot, Joe, are flying a reconnaissance mission over the Ardennes forest, spotting a German staff car.
