On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) and her navigator, Fred Noonan (Christopher Eccleston), are on the last leg of an around-the-world flight. Moving in vignettes from her early years when Earhart was captivated by the sight of an aircraft flying overhead on the Kansas prairie where she grew up, her life over the preceding decade gradually unfolds. As a young woman, she is recruited by publishing tycoon and eventual husband, George Putnam (Richard Gere) to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean, albeit as a passenger. Taking command of the flight results in a success and she is thrust into the limelight as the most famous woman pilot of her time. Putnam helps Earhart write a book chronicling the flight, much like his earlier triumph with Charles Lindbergh's We. Earhart gradually falls in love with Putnam and they eventually marry, although she enacts a "cruel" pledge as her wedding contract.

When Bennett Brewer (Aaron Johnson) dies, his family feel like they cannot go on. His mother Grace (Sarandon) and his father Allen (Brosnan) get an unexpected visitor knocking at their door; it turns out to be a young woman called Rose (Mulligan), who is pregnant with Bennett's child. As the story develops Bennett's younger brother Ryan is introduced and he is grieving the fact he did not say a final good bye to his brother. One sees the true relationships of the family as the story comes together, Grace waits at the bed of Jordan Walker, the man driving the truck which collided with Bennett's car in the crash. She is waiting for his wake so she can ask him what her son's final 17 minutes were. After a while, she finds out the truth but is disappointed in what she hears. In the last moments, Bennett was not calling his mother's name, he was calling to Rose asking the other wounded passenger Walker to make sure that she was safe.

Eric McNally (Tom Cavanagh) is a gay retired hockey player turned television sportscaster who lives with his partner Sam (Ben Shenkman), a sports lawyer. When Sam unexpectedly becomes the legal guardian of his brother's stepson, Scot (Noah Bernett), their lives are turned upside down as the demands of being a parent — as well as the boy's preference for clothing and hobbies which suggest that he may also be gay — begin to intrude ever more strongly on Eric's desire to remain closeted at work. Successful children's author Claire Holloway (Gabrielle Anwar) is troubled by nightmares, for which she is seeing a psychiatrist. While working out, watching television, she sees landscape of the Rose Marsh Farm in the Westmoreland County; and she notes that the farmhouse is linked to her nightmares. She decides to spend her vacation in the farm, which is located nearby a swamp; and she is haunted by the ghosts of a little girl (Niamh Wilson) and a teenage boy inside the house. She is befriended by the local publisher and historian Noah Pitney (Justin Louis); but, after a sequence of disturbing visions, she decides to contact paranormal consultant Geoffrey Hunt (Forrest Whitaker). Together, they investigate the mystery and uncover a tragedy that happened at the farm twenty years earlier.
