Wu Tianming (chinois simplifié : 吴天明 ; chinois traditionnel : 吳天明 ; pinyin : Wú Tiānmíng), né le 19 octobre 1939 dans le Shanxi, et mort le 4 mars 2014, est un réalisateur et producteur de cinéma chinois.

Biography

Wu Tianming est le fils d'un responsable local du parti communiste chinois qui a été emprisonné pendant la révolution culturelle. Après une formation d'art dramatique, il devient acteur. Peu engagé à l'époque, il échappe aux persécutions de la révolution culturelle puis commence sa carrière cinématographique comme coréalisateur de deux films avec Teng Wenji. Il réalise ensuite seul, La Rivière sauvage. Directeur du studio de X’ian en 1984, il tourne plusieurs films dont Le vieux puits dans lequel il donne sa chance à un jeune opérateur Zhang Yimou. Alors que ce dernier n'était pas un acteur professionnel le film rafle le prix du meilleur acteur et de la meilleure réalisation au deuxième Festival international du film de Tokyo et propulse le cinéma chinois sur la scène internationale. Sous sa direction, les studios de X'ian produisent les cinéastes de la " cinquième génération " comme Chen Kaige ou Zhang Yimou. Des films comme l'Affaire du canon noir ou Le Sorgho rouge, ours d'or à Berlin en 1988, sortiront de ces studios.

Menacé par la censure, il s’exile aux États-Unis où il demeure pendant huit ans. De retour en Chine en 1994, il tourne Le Roi des masques, primé dans de très nombreux festivals internationaux. Il travaille aussi pour la télévision en réalisant une série Visage noir en 1996 de 16 épisodes mettant en scène un personnage qui lutte contre la corruption. Quelques épisodes de cette série très populaire en Chine seront censurés. Il tourne en 2002 C.E.O. un film retraçant l'exceptionnelle aventure industrielle de l'entreprise Haier et de son PDG. Ce film retraçant le parcours d'un petit entrepreneur chinois qui réussit à faire en 15 ans de son entreprise l'un des leaders mondiaux de l'électroménager se termine par un appel au patriotisme économique et à la grandeur de la Chine. Beaucoup moins en nuances que ses œuvres précédentes, ce film est interprété par la critique internationale comme une concession au pouvoir en place.

The Joy Luck Club was formed by four women in San Francisco: Lindo Jong (Tsai Chin), Ying-Ying St. Clair (France Nuyen), An-Mei Hsu (Lisa Lu), and Suyuan Woo (Kieu Chinh). The members have mainly played mahjong and told each other's stories over the years. They emigrated from their native country, China, remarried, and gave birth to children in America. Suyuan's daughter June (Ming-Na Wen) replaced her when Suyuan died four months before the time the film is set. The mothers have high hopes for their daughters' success, but the daughters struggle through "anxieties, feelings of inadequacy, and failures." Throughout the film, the mothers and daughters bond by learning to understand each other and by overcoming their conflicts.

The First Emperor searches for the elixir of immortality, and he despatches 500 teenage boys and girls to help him accomplish this task. One of his soldiers, General Meng Tianfang falls in love with one of the despatched maiden by the name Dong'er. When their forbidden love is exposed, the girl reveals she has found the elusive elixir and secretly gives it to Meng. The emperor orders their execution and the soldier is sentenced to death by being encased alive in clay as a terracotta warrior, only to be reawakened in the 1930s when a struggling actress, Zhu Lili, the reincarnation of the girl who remembers nothing of her past life, accidentally stumbles upon the tomb of the First Emperor. The soldier struggles to adapt to a new era while the two are pursued by archeological looters and thugs.

Rafting down the Xiao River in Hunan, Pan Laowu (Li Wei) warns his fellow rafter Shi Gu (Hu Ronghua) not to take a wife, because "the wives of rafters are widows even while they live." Pan tells the story of a woman he loved, Wu Aihua (Tao Yuling), whom he never returned to after his raft broke up and he fell into debt. The third rafter, Zhao Liang, is revealed to have a large family (a wife and seven daughters). The story is about a pro-communist leftist Zhou Heung-Kong (Anthony Wong) who grew up in the pre-1997 British colony of Hong Kong starting the from 1950s.
