Le sous-marin nucléaire lanceur d'engins russe K-141 Koursk (Курск en russe) appartenait à la classe Projet 949A "Antei" ("Oscar II" pour l'OTAN). Ce navire récent (il avait été lancé en décembre 1994) et très performant illustrait la résurrection des forces navales russes après les années de déliquescence qui ont suivi la fin du régime soviétique. Le 12 août 2000, le Koursk fait naufrage en mer de Barents alors qu'il participe à d'importantes manœuvres de la Flotte du Nord. Lors de ces manœuvres, deux explosions successives sont en effet enregistrées mais personne n'en identifie l'origine, personne ne sait encore que cela provient d'un sous-marin et que tout l'avant du Koursk (de l'étrave au massif) a été entièrement ravagé alors qu'il était en plongée. Le Koursk a coulé aussitôt et repose désormais par 90 mètres de fond seulement (le sous-marin mesure 154 mètres de long). À bord, 23 marins réfugiés à l'arrière du sous-marin se débattent pour survivre. Les graves avaries subies par le bâtiment ne leur permettent pas de communiquer avec la surface ni d'émettre le moindre signal de détresse, si ce n'est des coups de marteau sur la coque. À terre, les familles font face aux obstacles et aux lourdeurs bureaucratiques qui compromettent le sauvetage, et l'absence de toute information fiable rend l'attente insupportable. Les jours passent sans que les autorités soient capables de donner des informations précises, et les opérations de sauvetage tardent à débuter. Dans le même temps les propositions d'aide venant de l'étranger sont déclinées. Après plusieurs jours d'atermoiements, de tentatives ratées pour arrimer un sous-marin de sauvetage au Koursk, il faut se rendre à l'évidence: il n'y a plus aucune chance de retrouver de survivants parmi les 118 membres d'équipage. Ce sont des plongeurs norvégiens qui réussissent les premiers à pénétrer à bord. Ce lourd bilan fait du naufrage du Koursk l'une des pires catastrophes touchant un navire de guerre en temps de paix. L'attitude des autorités civiles et navales, ainsi que la lenteur du déclenchement des opérations de secours et leur caractère calamiteux (maintenant les familles dans l'angoisse pendant de nombreux jours) ont choqué l'opinion publique bien au-delà des frontières de la Russie.

Frank is a low-level cocaine dealer in England, conducting business with his partner Tony and would-be-girlfriend Flo. When a former cellmate contacts him for a large drug deal, Frank borrows £48,000 of cocaine from Milo, a dangerous Serbian drug lord. He promises to return to Milo with the money the next day, but police raid the deal and Frank is forced to dump the cocaine in a duck lake. In custody, Frank is told by police that Tony has confessed to the deal, but they release him the next day. Frank quickly finds Tony and beats him savagely with a baseball bat.

The film opens some time after the original film with Tonny serving out his last day of a prison sentence. His cell-mate delivers a monologue advising Tonny to conquer his fear. He then reminds Tonny that he owes him money, but has chosen to give him more time out of respect for Tonny's father, the Duke, a vicious gangster. Upon his release, Tonny visits his father's garage business seeking employment. The Duke has a younger son from a different mother now and receives Tonny coldly, but he ultimately allows Tonny to work for him on a trial basis. Tonny steals a Ferrari in an effort to impress his father, but the car is rejected and the Duke berates Tonny mercilessly for his lack of responsibility.

Okwe is an illegal Nigerian immigrant to the United Kingdom who drives a cab in London during the day and works at the front desk of a hotel at night. The film follows the adventures of three children: a skateboarding mischief-maker named Fly, his sweet younger sister, Stella, and their cousin Chuck, a cautious, intelligent and overweight genetics prodigy. When their babysitter, Aunt Anna, falls asleep, the three children sneak off to go fishing only to stumble across the boathouse home of Professor MacKrill, an eccentric marine biologist. Reasoning that climate change could melt the polar icecaps within the next century, MacKrill has developed a potion that turns people into fish so they can survive the rising sea level and also an antidote to reverse the process. Unbeknownst to all, Stella drinks the potion, is transformed into a starfish and gets tossed out of the window into the sea. Since Stella's transformation was caught on camera, the tragedy is immediately discovered, so Fly, Chuck and Professor MacKrill head out onto the ocean in a desperate search. When a storm blows in, Fly recognizes the futility of their search, drinks the potion and jumps overboard, becoming a "Californian Flyfish". The boat capsizes and, because Chuck cannot swim, he's forced to drink the potion to survive, becoming a jellyfish. The Professor, the boat and all of its contents sinks beneath the waves.
