En 1959-1960, l'expédition franco-hollandaise organisée par Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau avec l'aide de Gérard Delloye réussit la première traversée sud-nord de l'île de Nouvelle-Guinée, dans sa partie alors sous contrôle des Pays-Bas. L'expédition est financée notamment par un film tourné en 35 mm. Ils passent 3 mois à visiter les tribus Asmat, avec l'aide d'un missionnaire catholique qui les y introduit, puis ils se lancent à l'assaut de la cordillère centrale en remontant le fleuve Steenboom, un affluent de l'Eilanden. Ils réalisent alors le premier contact avec les Papous des montagnes qui peuplent cette vallée, et utilisent toujours des haches de pierre, qu'ils appellent « pygmées » en raison de leur petite taille, puis avec leurs cousins de l'autre côté du col, les Eipomek. La colonne de 70 porteurs Muyu, des 10 militaires Papous armés et de sept Européens, peine à se trouver un chemin dans ces paysages accidentés (le col se situe à 3800 m) ; trois porteurs Muyu tombent malades et meurent. L'expédition rejoint le fleuve Indenburg après plusieurs mois de marche, ne devant son salut que par les parachutages de vivres et de médicaments depuis un avion. Les malades sont alors évacués et Hervé de Maigret et Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau continuent jusqu'à la côte nord, atteinte 4 mois après leur départ des Asmat.

Au début du Moyen Âge, les steppes de Russie sont sous la domination des Tartares, qui ne permettent qu'aux Vikings de passer en provenance des pays du nord. L'alliance est rompue lorsqu'Oleg, le chef des Vikings, refuse de se joindre à Togrul le Tartare dans sa guerre contre les Slaves. Oleg tue Togrul et prend sa fille Samia en otage. Le frère de Togrul, Burandai, devenu chef, capture en représailles Helga, la femme d'Oleg, et la livre à ses hommes. Un échange de prisonniers est envisagé mais Samia est tombé amoureuse d'Éric, le jeune frère d'Oleg, et ne veut pas partir. De plus Helga est incapable de supporter sa honte et se jette du haut d'une tour. Oleg et Éric se disputent à propos du sort de Samia, mais ils sont interrompus par l'arrivée des Tartares. Oleg et Burandai trouvent la mort dans la bataille qui s'ensuit et la forteresse viking est détruite par un incendie. Éric et Samia arrivent à s'échapper et trouvent refuge sur un navire qui les conduit dans le Grand Nord.

In July 1912, a traveling salesman, "Professor" Harold Hill (Robert Preston), arrives in the fictional location of River City, Iowa, intrigued by the challenge of swindling the famously stubborn natives of Iowa ("Iowa Stubborn"). In the early years of the twentieth century, an aging ex-lawman, Steve Judd (Joel McCrea), is hired to guard a shipment of gold from a high country mining camp to the town of Hornitos, California. Six miners were recently murdered trying to transport their gold on the one trail leading down from the crest of the Sierra Nevada. In his prime, Judd was a tough and respected lawman, but now his threadbare clothes and spectacles serve as reminders that he is long past his prime. Judd enlists the help of his old friend and partner Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott) to guard the gold shipment.
