A former American Volunteer Group pilot, Harry Walker (David Janssen), who flies a Hughes 500C helicopter for Salt Lake City radio station KBEX as a traffic reporter, is introduced doing an afternoon rush-hour report during a station nostalgia promotion in which standards from the World War II era are being played on air. Opening credits run over aerial combat footage borrowed from the 1942 Republic Pictures film Flying Tigers, then segues into footage of a P-40 Warhawk in full sharkmouth scheme being towed along the highway to the radio station by Walker as part of the promotion.

It concerns the lives of a group of misfits trying to find a happier life against the norms of society. Sutherland plays an ex-con with a passion for demolition derbies. The film opens with professional assassin Jeff Heston (Charles Bronson) and mistress Vanessa (Jill Ireland) pursued mercilessly while holidaying in the Virgin Islands. Bickford Waner (Hopper) who has failed as a train robber, decides to go straight and get an honest job. He arrives in Dime Box, Texas to find work. He's befriended by Reese Ford (Oates) and his wife Molly (Lee Purcell). Molly seduces Bickford getting herself pregnant and making her husband miserable, feeling betrayed by his best friend. Mean John, (Ben Johnson) the sheriff is right on top of the whole plot, recognizing Kid Blue for what he really is, in spite of his trying to change his character. Another friend that Kid Blue has is the town's preacher Bob, (Peter Boyle) who does an excellent acting job.

In Victorian England, philanthropic scientist Sir Hugo Cunningham is a part of a parapsychological society that studies psychic phenomena. As part of their latest investigation, the men have begun photographing individuals at the moment of death; done properly, the resultant photo depicts a strange blur hovering around the body. Though the society concludes that they have captured evidence of the soul escaping the body, Cunningham is skeptical.
