Relationships within the new family are tested by the condition of their new home which is nothing more than a dilapidated shack, Buddy's new situation of having both a father (contacted via telephone) and step-father, and the introduction of farm animals to the city-raised women. The film takes place in the year 1750 on the American frontier during the colonial days, before the United States declared its independence. A group of pioneers narrowly escape persecution when their preacher is accused of adultery and polygamy. The preacher, Will Smythe, is accused of having an affair with a married woman, Eloise Dalton, whose husband is away hunting for food, and another woman, Leah, who is insane. Also among their group is Eloise's daughter Fanny Dalton, the couple Jewell Buchanan and Margaret Buchanan along with their daughter Cathleen, Calvin and his wife who goes by the name Sister, and their granddaughter Meg.

En 1940, à Venise, alors que l'Italie fasciste s’apprête à entrer en guerre, Nino, un homme déclinant et libertin, tient le journal de ses frustrations et de ses fantasmes avec le désir inavoué que Teresa, sa très belle épouse, le lise. Laszlo, son futur gendre, est photographe. Nino obtient sa complicité en lui demandant de développer des photos de sa femme en tenue suggestive. Laszlo accepte mais fait en sorte que Lisa, sa fiancée, fasciste convaincue, les trouve. Lisa adopte ensuite une attitude ambiguë car, après avoir vertement reproché son inconduite à sa mère, elle fait en sorte de la rapprocher de Laszlo afin qu'une liaison se concrétise. Teresa se met alors à son tour à rédiger un journal qui répond à celui de son mari.

Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the film begins in a diner called Bennys Billiards, where local tough guy Rusty James is told by Midget that rival group leader Biff Wilcox wants to meet him that night in an abandoned garage lot for a fight. Accepting the challenge, Rusty James then talks with his friends — the wily Smokey, loyal B.J., and nerdy Steve - who all have a different take on the forthcoming fight. Steve mentions that Rusty James' older brother, "The Motorcycle Boy," would not be pleased with the fight as he had previously created a truce forbidding gang fights, or "rumbles." Rusty James dismisses him, saying that Motorcycle Boy (whose real name is never revealed) has been gone for two months, leaving without explanation or promise of return.

A down on his luck, former Green Beret captain (Carradine), freshly discharged from the Vietnam War, drifts into Drury, Kansas. There he finds a derelict merry-go-round that he decides to restore. "The symbolism of a man wanting to build something joyful after being part of the carnage and destruction of war," surmised film critic, Charles Champlin. The people of the town have mixed reactions: some support his efforts while others hinder them. Among his supporters are two local business men: a hardware store owner, played by Barbara Hershey's father, Arnold Herzstein, and Mike, a gas station proprietor played by Michael Greene, who had guest-starred on two episodes of Carradine's television series, Kung Fu. Both men supply employment to the veteran as well as parts and tools for his endeavour.

Au Nicaragua en 1979, le journaliste-photographe Russell Price couvre la guerre civile opposant les sandinistes au président Anastasio Somoza. Ses amis, le chef d'antenne Alex Grazier et la journaliste de la radio Claire, l'accompagnent. Au moment où ils arrivent, les sandinistes frappent même jusque dans la capitale, Managua. Au fil des jours, Russell en vient à se poser des questions sur la façon de couvrir cette guerre, lorsqu'il prend conscience de la brutalité de l'armée somoziste vis-à-vis de la population. Lui et Claire sont bientôt approchés par les sandinistes afin de photographier Rafael, leur leader, dont le gouvernement nicaraguayen vient d'annoncer la mort. Rafael est en réalité bel et bien mort, mais les guérilleros veulent démontrer, par une photographie, qu'il est toujours vivant afin de finir la guerre à leur avantage. Après quelques hésitations, Russell accepte et, le lendemain, la photo du chef sandiniste est diffusée dans tout le pays, ce qui déstabilise quelque peu le gouvernement Somoza. Le régime commence à se poser des questions sur la neutralité de la presse. Alex Grazier est bientôt arrêté puis abattu par la Guardia. Russell Price, qui a réussi à photographier l'assassinat, parvient à rendre publiques les photos et le gouvernement américain abandonne toute aide au régime somoziste. Les sandinistes entrent en vainqueurs à Managua et le dictateur fuit le pays.

Miss Marple est en vacances à la Barbade, dans une pension tenue depuis peu par Molly et Tim Kendal. Parmi les autres clients se trouve le major Palgrave, personnage bavard qui lui raconte pourquoi il porte un œil de verre. Il explique à miss Marple qu'un assassin se trouve probablement dans l'île, et s'apprête à en montrer la photographie, mais il s'abstient quand il voit arriver un groupe de quatre autres touristes. Le lendemain, le major Palgrave est retrouvé mort, d'une crise cardiaque semble-t-il. Une jeune employée antillaise de la pension remarque que dans la chambre du major se trouve un médicament qu'elle n'y avait jamais vu auparavant. Après l'exhumation du corps de Palgrave, il est établi qu'il a été empoisonné.
