In 1978, narcissistic, manipulative Madeline Ashton performs in a musical on Broadway. Madeline invites long-time rival Helen Sharp, an aspiring writer, backstage along with her fiancé, plastic surgeon Ernest Menville. Ernest is smitten with Madeline, soon breaking off his engagement with Helen to marry her. Seven years later, Helen is in a psychiatric hospital after fixating upon Madeline. Obese and depressed, Helen feigns rehabilitation and is released, plotting revenge on Madeline.

Elizabeth von Arnim's novel tells of four dissimilar women in 1920s England who leave their rainy, grey environments to go on holiday in Italy. Mrs Arbuthnot and Mrs Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading a newspaper advertisement for a small medieval castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let furnished for the month of April. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. Having decided to seek other ladies to help share expenses, they reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs Fisher and the stunning but aloof Lady Caroline Dester. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.

A country spider is the friend of a young girl named Leslie McGroarty (voiced by Thora Birch), who is taking piano lessons from a very strict instructor (voiced by Andrea Martin) (incidentally, she's learning to play the actual rhyme) and her cat, Langston. When the instructor is frightened by Itsy, she calls an Exterminator, that uses more and more extreme measures to try to kill Itsy, most of which end up causing pain and destruction to the instructor's home, Langston and the Exterminator himself, which turns out to be a heavily armed android (voiced by Jim Carrey). The Exterminator's methods begin to get even more extreme, escalating from poison and vacuums to guns and explosives, until the instructor's house is eventually blown up. At the end of the film, Itsy is finally reunited with Leslie (who had the sense to get out of the house before the flamethrowers came out), and they go home to the city.
