In Tibet, following the First World War, an American named Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), succumbing to his darker instincts during the war, has set himself up as a brutal warlord and opium kingpin under the alias of Ying-Ko (Mandarin Chinese for "Dark Eagle"). He is abducted from his palace by servants of the Tulku (Barry Dennen), a holy man who exhibits otherworldly powers and knows Cranston's identity. He informs Cranston that he is to become a force for good. Cranston objects but is silenced by the Phurba (Frank Welker), a mystical sentient flying dagger that assaults Cranston, wounding him. Cranston is unable to refuse and remains under the tutelage of the Tulku for seven years. He learns to "cloud men's minds," a form of mystical, psychic hypnosis that allows him to influence others' thoughts and bend their perceptions so he cannot be seen, except for his shadow (since light itself cannot be deceived), hence his new alias.

Bennington Austin "Bink" Cotwell IV (Adam and Jacob Worton), a mischievous baby who lives in a huge mansion with his family, is just about to appear in the social pages of the newspaper. Three criminals, Eddie, Norby, and Veeko, pose as the photographers and kidnap him, demanding a ransom. After the kidnapping, however, they have difficulty controlling him. While trying to get Bink to fall asleep, Norby does so reading Bink's book titled "Baby's Day Out", leaving him unattended. Looking through it, Bink notices a bird on the page and then one by the open window. He follows it out and successfully gets away from his kidnappers, with Eddie falling off the building and into a garbage bin while chasing after him through the rooftop.

Peter Brackett, le journaliste vedette du Chicago Chronicle, use de son prestige pour séduire les jeunes femmes et vendre son premier roman, Légers mensonges. Le déraillement d'un train, d'apparence banal, lui donne l'occasion de mener une petite enquête comme il les aime. À un premier imprévu — l'irruption d'une belle concurrente longiligne, Sabrina Peterson, du Globe — s'en ajoute bientôt un autre, beaucoup plus inquiétant. La catastrophe ferroviaire cache une sombre affaire, fertile en meurtres et en tentatives de corruption, qu'un sigle mystérieux, « L.D.F. », ne permet guère d'expliquer. Tout en se querellant, Sabrina et Brackett remontent la filière jusqu'à une grande entreprise chimique, connue pour sa fabrication de napalm pendant la guerre du Viêt Nam.
