At Fairmount High School, Ohio, a group of rude and obnoxious seniors begins their school with an assembly featuring a band called "High on Life" though the student body shows lack of response due to the choice of music playing in front of them. As the band continues to play onstage, Mark "Dags" D'Agastino (Jeremy Renner) and Reggie Barry (Rob Moore) decide to sabotage the assembly by having a track played and exposing the band lip syncing their music as it ends drastically but upbeat. After a typing class, the seniors cut school and throw a party at the home of Principal Moss (Matt Frewer). Moss eventually gets informed about the party from the school body president Steve Nisser (Sergio Di Zio). When he returns home, he gives the group detention, forcing them to write a letter to the President of the United States, explaining what is wrong with the education system.

The year is 2078. The planet Sirius 6B, once a thriving mining hub, has been reduced to a toxic wasteland by a civil war between the mining company, known as the New Economic Block (NEB), and the Alliance, a group of former mining and science personnel. Five years into the war, Alliance scientists created and deployed Autonomous Mobile Swords (AMS) — artificially intelligent self-replicating machines that hunt down and kill NEB soldiers on their own. They are nicknamed "screamers" because of a high-pitched noise they emit as they attack. Screamers track targets by their heartbeats, so Alliance soldiers wear "tabs" which broadcast a signal canceling out the wearer's heartbeat and rendering them "invisible" to the machines.

William Adamson (Mark Rylance), a brilliant naturalist, has recently returned to Victorian England, staying with the family of his wealthy benefactor, Sir Harold Alabaster (Jeremy Kemp). Distraught but skillful bounty hunter Lewis Gates (Tom Berenger) pursues three armed escaped convicts into Montana's Oxbow Quadrangle, followed by his faithful companion called Zip, an Australian cattle dog at the persistence of his unforgiving father-in-law, whom blames Gates for his daughter's tragic death. All Gates finds is a few scraps of cloth, some blood, and an old-fashioned Indian arrow. He takes the arrow to anthropologist Lillian Sloan (Barbara Hershey) who identifies it as a replica of the arrows used by Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. Gates doesn't think it's a replica and, after some library research, develops a long list of people who have disappeared into the Oxbow and a story of a "wild child" captured in the woods in the early 20th century. Now he's convinced that the fugitives were killed by a tribe of Dog Soldiers, a hardy band of native Americans who had somehow escaped the 1864 Sand Creek massacre and survived for 128 years secluded in the Montana Wilderness, killing anyone who threatened to find and expose them.

Chan Foh To (Jackie Chan) is a junkyard mechanic and a part-time race car driver who helps the Hong Kong Police Force in their crackdown on illegal street racing in the country. One night, while helping news reporter Amy Yip (Anita Yuen) and Kong (Ken Lo) after their Mitsubishi FTO runs out of gasoline, Chan commandeers the car with Amy inside to chase after a speeding black Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 driven by the dangerous criminal driver Warner "Cougar" Kaugman (Thorsten Nickel). In the high speed car chase's climax, Chan traps Cougar in a police roadblock and has him apprehended. However, due to a lack of evidence and a warrant for arrest, Cougar is immediately released from police custody. Chan continues to be harassed by Amy, who wants to do a cover story of him.

After tying for the win in New York's "Drag Queen of the Year" contest, Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) and Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) win a trip to Hollywood to take part in the even bigger, "Miss Drag Queen of America Pageant." Before they depart, Vida persuades Noxeema to take along the inexperienced "drag princess" Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) as their protégé (the duo initially refer to Chi-Chi simply as a "boy in a dress" rather than as a fully-fledged drag queen). To do this, they trade in their airplane tickets for cash and buy a stylish but old Cadillac convertible with money given to them by John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt (Robin Williams). The three of them set off for Los Angeles by car, carrying with them an iconic photo of Julie Newmar (signed, "To Wong Foo, thanks for everything! Julie Newmar") that Vida purloined from a restaurant wall.

Tom Beckwith est un ancien policier père d'une petite fille Ronny, qui a démissionné après l'assassinat de Tina sa femme. Alors qu'il cherche une réorientation, il décide de suivre les cours de Lauren Porter, une psychiatre. Lorsque le film commence, une amie de celle-ci a été assassinée. Lauren demande à Tom de le prendre en filature car elle souffre de crises d'amnésie récurrentes depuis que sa mère a tué son beau-père. Le premier soir, Tom se rend en boîte de nuit afin de mieux la surveiller mais il comprend très rapidement que Lauren a un alter-égo, Léna. Après que les propriétaires du club l'aient frappé, il envisage dans un premier temps de renoncer à son enquête mais ses sentiments envers Lauren le font changer d'avis. Il retrouve le propriétaire et lui fait subir un interrogatoire musclé. Beaucoup plus tard, Tom est assez confronté entre les deux vies de Lauren et comprend que la seule solution pour qu'elle guérisse serait de la ramener sur les lieux du terrible accident. Lauren et Tom découvrent que le père de Lauren est le véritable assassin, et Tom parvient à le mettre hors d'état de nuire. Tom finit par réintégrer la police.
