Les Chiens enragés est un film italien réalisé par Mario Bava tourné en 1974, mais le film a été saisi par les tribunaux durant les derniers stades de la production lorsque le producteur a fait faillite après que le principal investisseur du film meure dans un accident de voiture et n'est finalement sorti qu'en 1998 en VHS et réédité en 2007 sous une forme légèrement différente, sur DVD aux États-Unis sous le titre Kidnapped. Le titre original Semaforo rosso (traduction : feu rouge) est issu d'une scène clé du film dans laquelle les personnages font un arrêt fatal à un feu de circulation, cet évènement déclenche tous les évènements de l'intrigue.

Daryl Allen (Bokeem Woodbine), who narrates, is an ex-con. After serving time on drug charges, he plans to get his life straight, open up a nightclub and be a part of his son Jerome's life. His friend Trip offers to give him money for his business and Daryl accepts. Daryl drives Trip to the bank, unaware he's taking part in a robbery, which makes him furious. The police chase them down and Daryl and Trip are involved in a car accident, which leads Trip getting killed and Daryl sent back to the slammer for a long stretch.

Max (David Schwimmer), an alpha-male commitment-phobic sports broadcaster, and Jay (Jason Lee), a neurotic novelist, have been best friends since childhood. Respected anthropologist James Krippendorf (Richard Dreyfuss) and his wife, Jennifer (Barbara Williams), bring their three children along during their much-enjoyed search in New Guinea for a lost tribe. The search fails, despite the family's best efforts. After Jennifer's death back in the U.S., James falls into academic stagnation, having spent all his foundation grant money raising the children as a single parent. Scheduled to lecture at a college and fearful of being charged with misuse of grant funds, James concocts an imaginary tribe, the Shelmikedmu, using the names of his children as a basis. He later fakes a 16 mm "documentary" film, casting his children as tribe members and superimposing footage of a legitimate New Guinean tribe so as to enhance the illusion.

John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) awakens in a hotel bathtub, suffering from amnesia. Ernest (Jim Varney) is working as a golf ball collector at a golf range in Valdosta, Georgia, but fantasizes about being a war hero. Joe is an aspiring actor working as a bus boy in a high-class restaurant. His longtime girlfriend Mary works as a cosmetician for the fashion industry and largely supports him with her steady income. Joe is more concerned with expressing himself than getting a paying job, and has been unwilling to accept roles that do not live up to his artistic standard. Mary supports Joe, but urges him to accept any role to get his foot in the door. Meanwhile, his co-worker Bob lands a lucrative role on a soap opera. Bob is a classically trained actor, but is willing to overlook the quality of the material for the money.
