Again and again, people disappear from a diamond mine. Dr. Straker and a search team are sent into the desert to find out why the geologists of a diamond expedition have lost radio contact. They arrive at camp of the scientists in the desert, but soon find the neatly gnawed bones of their colleagues and a trail that leads them to a strange rock formation. Once at camp they find only the cleanly gnawed bones of the workers. Soon it becomes clear that there is a murderous beast on the loose.

The film opens with Eagle Boy, a young man who is on a vision quest. It then cuts to the present, where a 17-year-old Lakota named Shane Chasing Horse is living on the Pine Ridge reservation. He is in trouble because he owes some money to a local gang—money he used to buy a beautiful ring for Mae Little Wounded, a girl he likes. Meanwhile, his mother asks him to drive his grandfather, Pete Chasing Horse, a storyteller, down to the powwow. Shane is reluctant. However, when the gang comes after him, Shane changes his mind and heads out to the powwow with his grandfather, who agrees to give him his truck once they reach the powwow. Grandfather tells Shane the story of a young Lakota man who tries to win the hand of Bluebird Woman. He also tells the story of how a thunder spirit falls in love with a Mohawk woman and brings her up into the ethereal world of Sky Woman, and of how she raised their son back in her village until he was struck by one of the villagers and brought back to live with his father.

The film follows the adventures of Shetan, a young black Arabian colt. Infirmière stagiaire en chirurgie dans l'hôpital Trousseau de Tours où travaille sa cousine Véronique (Catherine Jacob), Isabelle (Sophie Quinton) est sujette à un important souci de santé : elle a des vertiges. L'ORL qu'elle consulte lui diagnostique une anomalie grave de l'oreille interne, affection qui relève de la neurochirurgie. Elle est contrainte à se faire opérer par le Dr Philipp (Laurent Lucas). Or ce neurochirurgien a un comportement étrange, et plus particulièrement vis-à-vis d'elle, notamment en la surnommant Bambi tout en restant paradoxalement d'une attitude glaciale. Par ailleurs dans la même semaine deux patients ont eu un réveil soudain lors d'opération chirurgicale, en raison d'une anomalie dans le dosage de la dilution de l'anesthésique. Puis un matin une patiente asiatique a disparu de la chambre qu'elle occupait. Et deux jours plus tard une patiente meurt soudainement en salle de réveil. Isabelle, de plus en plus inquiète du comportement du Dr Philipp, commence à le soupçonner de voler des doses d'anesthésique en prélevant à la seringue dans les flacons en stock, à travers la capsule caoutchoutée.

Tom Baker (Martin) is a football coach at a small rural college in Midland, Indiana, where he raised twelve children, and his wife, Kate (Hunt), has written about her story in a book and hopes to send it to her friend to publish it. At the film's beginning, Tom unexpectedly receives an offer from his old friend and football teammate, Shake McGuire (Jenkins), to coach at his alma mater in Evanston, Illinois. Tom accepts the offer, and he and Kate begin making their plans on moving to Evanston. All twelve children find out and demand the move be put to a vote, even though Tom says it would not have any power. Tom loses the vote, even after he and Kate join, but goes ahead with the move anyway, claiming there will be more money and that they will be a "happier and stronger family". However, the atmosphere at the Bakers' new house is tense, and the situation at school for the children is even worse, although their new neighbors' the Shenks seem allright, especially their first and only son, Dylan.

The film is set in the mountainous regions of the western Hunan province in the early 1980s. At the film's start, a young man (Liu Ye) begins his first journey as a postman at the mountainous rural areas of the aforesaid regions. His father (Ten Rujun), a veteran postman forced to retire due to a bad knee, decides to accompany him together with the family's faithful dog, Buddy.
