In 1993, Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is a guide at an Antarctica research base under contract with the National Science Foundation. UCLA professor, Dr. Davis McClaren (Bruce Greenwood), arrives at the base. He presses Shepard to take him to Mount Melbourne to attempt to find a rare meteorite from the planet Mercury. Shepard does so, ignoring his own intuition, which tells him it is too late in the season to complete such a treacherous route, and decides that the only way to get to Mount Melbourne is by dog sled.

The quiet life of a Paris family is disturbed when they receive a series of surveillance tapes of the exterior of their residence from an anonymous source. Georges Laurent is the successful host of a French literary television program, living with his wife Anne, a book publisher, and their 12-year-old son Pierrot. Unmarked videocassettes arrive on their doorstep, tapes that show extended observation of their home's exterior from a static street camera that is never noticed. At first passive and harmless, but later accompanied by crude, disturbing crayon drawings, the tapes lead to questions about Georges' early life that disrupt both his work and marriage. But because the tapes do not contain an open threat, the police refuse to help the family.

The camera slowly zooms out on a young woman masturbating to a porn tape. She gets up abruptly and goes out to a party, looking for sex. Antoine, noctambule trentenaire, écume les bars et boîtes de nuit de Paris, entrant grâce à son bagou dans les lieux les plus prisés de la capitale. Il réussit un soir à entrer dans une réception privée en citant le nom de Jordan, dont il a entendu parler un peu plus tôt. Mais l'hôte de la soirée, un diplomate de l'ONU nommé von Bülow, offre alors à Antoine la somme d'un million si celui-ci réussit à retrouver la trace de l'insaisissable Jordan. Avec l'aide de son ami Étienne, dans sa quête de Jordan, Antoine commence à recueillir des indices et finit par rencontrer la sœur de celui-ci, l'envoûtante Violaine, avec qui il termine la soirée. Mais c'est le début des ennuis pour Antoine qui est drogué par Violaine et se retrouve errant en sang dans Paris au petit matin, comme victime d'une attaque de vampire. Il est de plus mis sous pression par von Bülow qui, sous la menace, l'oblige à des résultats rapides ; il doit prendre de plus en plus de risques, plongeant dans les milieux les plus glauques du Paris nocturne, dans son enquête concernant ce couple mystérieux.

The film follows two teenagers, Luca (Nicolas Vaporidis) and Claudia (Cristiana Capotondi), and their friends as they all prepare for the dreaded maturità (high school graduation) exams during the summer of 1989. In the prologue, which is set in medieval times, the audience is introduced to humans with special powers called The Others (Иные, иной; Inyye, Inoy). The Others are divided into two camps, with each Other either allied with the forces of Light or the forces of Darkness, and the prologue recounts a great battle between the two sides. Geser, the Lord of the Light, realized that the two forces would eventually annihilate each other. He stopped the battle and offered a truce to the forces of Darkness, led by Zavulon. To make sure each side honored its side of the agreement, the Light would have a "Night Watch" to monitor the forces of Darkness at night, and the Darkness would have a "Day Watch" to police the forces of Light during the day. This agreement maintained balance for centuries to come.

Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) is an obese woman, who dreams of marrying Napoleon Dynamite (Josh Meyers), but even in her dreams she is rejected.
