Danny Ortego (Manuel Garcia) is released from prison after a seventeen-year-long term for shooting his mother's abusive boyfriend moments after he raped Danny's childhood friend Natalie. He returns to Houston, Texas, and is shocked to learn that drug barons and other bosses of crime have taken over his beloved hometown. Although he initially wanted to turn over a new leaf. His criminal record and appearance hinders the job hunt. He eventually starts working at a Limo company after his childhood friend Corando vouches for him. Reluctantly Corando tells Natalie that Danny is home and she goes to see him. Corando has dreams of himself with Natalie but Natalie wants to remain Corando's good friend. Ortego finally decides to partner with Corando and push drugs while saving to start their own business. While buying drugs they are almost beaten and shot to death, until known drug lord "Big Joe" (Ricardo G. Lerma) recognizes his prison tattoo, one he shares as well. Ortego and Corando now has a steady supplier and start to indulge by buying nice cars and new houses. After a few awkward outings with Natalie, they kiss and begin a lasting relationship. Corando visits Danny's home one morning and sees Natalie naked with Danny. He leaves distraughtly, having knocked Danny down, saying just leave me alone. This ended their friendship and Corando had nothing to say to either of them. Danny's beloved grandfather dies and he sees Corando, who is still upset, at the funeral. Having no reason to remain in the city now, Danny and Natalie plan to leave and start a new life. Having broke the partnership, their main customer, Mr. Maxwell, is hard pressed for more drugs. With Corando missing and not answering his phone, he threatens Danny's loved ones life, mainly Natalie. Danny agrees one last deal and enroute to suppliers with Big Joe, they stop to collect cash owed to Big Joe. Big Joe is shot and dies in the car. Danny answers his phone and says he'll come instead of Big Joe.

Handsome Harry is the story of Harry Sweeney’s journey to find forgiveness from an old Navy friend. Kelly asks Harry to seek forgiveness from David on his behalf. Kelly dies in the hospital the next day. Harry then goes on to meet the rest of his Navy buddies to find the truth about what actually happened the night they assaulted David together. Somebody dropped a generator on David's hand that night, but Harry could not recollect who it was. In time it was revealed that Harry and David were having an affair back in the Navy. Kelly found Harry and David in a sexually compromising position in the shower. In fear of repercussion, Harry turned on David. Kelly and rest of the gang including Harry got drunk and assaulted David. It was in the end revealed that Harry was the one who dropped the generator on David, maiming him for life.

A 17-year-old girl (Julianne Michelle) faces and overcomes hardship with the discovery of the mother she never knew and with her love for a hobbled horse named Rainbow. With her father dying in the earliest moments of the film Shannon has to learn from a friend of the family that her father participated in kidnapping her from her mother (Christine) moments after birth. Once the hospital therapist is through with her she ends up moving from Florida to Pennsylvania where Christine lives and works as a neo-natal pediatrician. She gets involved in the lives of Christine's boyfriend Eric and his nephew Brandon and niece Rio. They have a stables that works in harness racing and have been bringing along a filly named Rainbow who takes very strongly to Shannon. Eric and those around him are targets of a spiteful grudge held by the rich Mitchell Prescott who buys the filly for $15,000 in a claiming race she was entered in for experience. Mitchell runs Rainbow into the ground, having her beaten until nearly dead for the sin of having a mind of her own and an unshakable preference for Shannon, then sells her off to the knackers. Eric is alerted to this and tracks down the horse van en route to the location where Rainbow is due to be slaughtered and buys her back for $400. The filly is returned to Shannon's care and a trainer with a murky past (Max) is given the task to return her to health and soundness. They move Rainbow to a neighboring farm to train her to racing fitness while avoiding a spy at Parker stables. The culmination is at the Pennsylvania Cup harness race.

In 1974, the Conway family are at a drive-in theater in Connecticut watching The Three Stooges. The parents are Gloria (Geena Davis), a foul-mouthed and strict mother who will always take responsibility over the family, Ray (Joel Tobeck), an easy going father, and siblings Linda, Gene, Larry (Harry Cook) and Billy (Harrison Gilbertson) who is an accident-prone child. In the meantime, the Conway's neighbor, Douglas "Doug" Post (Sebastian Gregory), whom Gloria hates and often calls him names because he is the one who causes problems that could be offensive towards the family, drives by on his bike and Gene leads him up to the top of the drive-in screen. Gene then proceeds to urinate out of the screen. While an infuriated Gloria trips as she approaches the screen, the police are dispatched to handle the situation as infuriated and confused guests honk at Gene and Doug. While driving back home, an argument over the incident causes their car to collide with a pick-up truck during the rainy night. Although Gloria, Ray, Billy, and Larry only suffer minor injuries, Linda is killed and Gene is severely injured with severe brain damage (that could be fatal in a matter of time) and is left paralyzed from the head down.

In the not too distant future, society has levied laws against smoking and forced citizens to live in a certain part of town called the "SMOKING SECTION" if one wants to smoke cigarettes. After crossing the line into the smoking ghetto, Cigarettes now cost $63.49 a pack, and are sold on the street corners and underground bars. The unnamed heroine (Cori Dials) of the film works in the "Vice Club", an abandoned 1930s era cigarette factory turned club, where a once iconic emblem of a giant cigarette tipping over into a giant ashtray, now sits atop the factory coated with rust like a cancer. Occasionally still tilting into the astray if the wind is strong enough, the giant cigarette squeaks like a siren, going throughout the city.

After her landlady (Dee Wallace) gives her an extension on the deposit for her new apartment, college student Samantha Hughes (Jocelin Donahue) takes on a babysitting job for Mr. Ulman (Tom Noonan) and his wife (Mary Woronov). Ulman asks to meet her but stands her up, later apologizing and offering to pay double the original salary. Samantha accepts and gets a ride to the remote mansion from her best friend, Megan (Greta Gerwig), who expresses her distrust. At the house, Mr. Ulman pulls her aside and reveals that he does not have any children; the babysitting job is to attend to his wife's ailing mother. Samantha balks but finally agrees, if he will pay her $400, a significant increase in her pay. Megan immediately leaves, citing Ulman's lies and peculiar behavior, but she reluctantly promises to pick up Samantha later. Samantha stays, after accepting the money. On the way home, Megan stops in her car to smoke a cigarette. When her car lighter will not work, a stranger (A.J. Bowen) suddenly appears out of nowhere, startling her, and lights her cigarette for her. When Megan reveals that she is not the babysitter hired by the Ulmans, she is abruptly shot and murdered by the stranger.
