Néanmoins à l'école et dans leur voisinage, elles doivent lutter contre les préjugés et les quolibets qui les concernent du fait de leur origine italienne et que leur mère les élève seule (ce qui est mal vu à l'époque). Cette dernière, italienne immigrée en France (donc étrangère), abandonnée par son mari, est en permanence débordée, car devant mener de front son travail et son ménage dans une pauvreté relative. In Hong Kong, owner and majority shareholder of the W Group, Nerio Winch, is awoken up by a phone call on his yacht, Neretva. After he picks up, an unknown man warns Nerio that he found some else to have business with, and Nerio abruptly ends the call. Nerio gets up from his bed and goes to the lower deck, eating an apple. After he throws it into the water, he hears a weird sound from the water. Lowering down to see the source, a diver snatches him and pulls him down and suffocates him. The next day, the W Group board of directors meets up, with Ann Ferguson, Nerio's right-hand man, meets up to discuss the situation. They recently found out that Nerio had a secret son, named Largo, who was adopted from a Yugoslavian orphanage in 1980, over 28 years ago, and was kept as a secret from everyone, and he was raised by Josip and Hannah, a French-Croatian family to whom Nerio was close, along with Josip and Hannah's own son, Goran, until Nerio picked him up and raised him to take over his company one day. Other members are skeptical of Largo's existence, but they want to bring him in to see if he truly is his heir.

She tells them a story about Pirate Fritton, her ancestor, who supposedly hid a great treasure somewhere in the world. In 1905, Sun Wen intends to go abroad to Hong Kong, then a British colony, to discuss his plans with fellow Tongmenghui members to overthrow the corrupt and crumbling Qing dynasty in China. Empress Dowager Cixi sends a group of assassins, led by Yan Xiaoguo, to kill Sun. Revolutionary Chen Shaobai arrives in Hong Kong a few days before Sun's arrival, to meet Li Yutang, a businessman who provides financial aid for the revolutionaries. As Sun Wen's arrival day draws near, trouble begins brewing in Hong Kong as Chen Shaobai's acquaintances are murdered and Chen himself is kidnapped by the assassins during a raid. Li Yutang decides to officially declare his support for the revolutionaries after the newspaper agency is closed by the British authorities, who do not interfere in China's political situation. Li rallies a group of men, including rickshaw pullers, hawkers and a beggar, to serve as bodyguards for Sun Wen when he arrives. Li's son, Chongguang, is chosen to act as a decoy for Sun Wen to divert the assassins away while Sun attends the meeting and leaves Hong Kong safely.

Katie, une femme ordinaire élevant seule sa fille de sept ans Lisa et travaillant comme ouvrière sur une chaîne de montage dans une usine chimique, rencontre sur son lieu de travail Paco avec qui elle vit une histoire d'amour. Katie s'inquiète des ecchymoses qui apparaissent sur le dos de son nourrisson et suspecte Paco de le frapper, si bien que ce dernier outragé quitte le domicile familial. Ricky est en fait être un bébé extraordinaire (ange ou monstre ?) avec des ailes qui lui poussent dans le dos. Finalement le bébé prend son envol, et les médias voyeuristes s'emparent de cette attraction lorsque Ricky voltige dans un supermarché. Paco convainc Katie de montrer le bébé volant à la presse pour relâcher la pression médiatique et gagner de l'argent qui leur permettrait d'acheter une maison plus grande pour le bébé. Ricky profite de l'occasion pour s'envoler au-dessus d'un lac. Croyant l'enfant perdu, Paco se résigne mais Katie, désespérée, retourne au lac pour se suicider. Ricky réapparaît quelques instants, le visage heureux tel un ange, pour rassurer sa mère mais doit à nouveau s'envoler car il n'a pas sa place dans cette société. Ricky se révèle ainsi l’être transitionnel permettant à Lisa d’accepter son beau-père et à Katie, toujours dans la crainte de ne pas être à la hauteur, de devenir une mère et une femme heureuse dans son corps et son esprit, comme le montre la scène finale dans laquelle Lisa se blottit dans le dos de Paco et Katie, sereine, est enceinte d'un nouveau bébé.
