In 1961 the freshman class of Westwood High School in Los Angeles is profiled in Look magazine. In the article they are called the future of the country. Now it's four years later, and that class is experiencing their last day of school. That night, they all meet at the local teenage hangout, "Pop's Paradise Café". Pops is scheduled for demolition in two days, to be make way for a mall. Over the course of the night, we learn of the hopes, dreams and fears of a close-knit group of friends. Throughout the film, the soundtrack is provided by The Beard, a DJ at the local AM radio station.

In 2688, humanity exists as a utopian society due to the inspiration of the music and wisdom of the Two Great Ones: Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted "Theodore" Logan (Keanu Reeves). The film begins with a shot of Victor Ajax (Reed Birney), who has been sentenced to death, sitting in an electric chair. The film then flashes back to show that Victor once was a promising young technician in the employ of Trend-Odegard Security. Mr. Trend (Edward R. Pressman), co-owner of the company, has learned of a plan by his partner to sell the company to Renaldo "The Heel" (Bruce Campbell) and responds by hiring two exterminators who promise to "kill all sizes" (Brion James and Paul Smith) in order to eliminate Odegard and his plan. When Victor, who has been installing security cameras in Trend's apartment building, seems about to go back to the store, Trend distracts him with a lecture about "the grand design" and sends Victor on a quest to find his dream girl.

Murray "Icy Calm" Lonigan (William Watson) and Tony Agrosio (Bert Hinchman) are two small-time drug dealers who are set up by two crooks (Anthony Miller and Edward Morrison) during a drug trade. They planted a homer (a tracking device) inside a briefcase containing $1,000,000, after finding out, they brutally shoot both of them. Desperate, they store the money and drugs into a Corvette Stingray in a used car lot. Slim (Morgan Hatch), the owner of the lot, comes out to see what's going on. With nothing or no one in sight, Slim puts a Sold sign on the Corvette's windshield.
