Khara, Inc. (株式会社カラー, Kabushiki gaisha Karā, stylized as khara, Inc.) is a Japanese animation studio best known for its work on the Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy. Studio khara (スタジオカラー, Sutajio Karā) is the primary animation production studio. It was founded by Hideaki Anno in May 2006, and was shown publicly on 1 August when recruitment notices were posted on his website; Anno remains its president. It has built up appropriate infrastructure. The name khara comes from the Greek word χαρα, meaning joy.
Anno left Gainax and transitioned to Khara; as part of his public statements on the Rebuild films, he wrote:
"For this purpose, we are not returning to our roots at Gainax. I have set up a production company and studio, and it is in this new setting that we will start again. Without looking back, without admiration for the circumstances, we aim to walk towards the future. Thankfully, we have gathered staff from the old series, new staff, and many other fantastic staff to work on this series. We realize that we are creating something that will be better than the last series."
Key contributors brought back to work on the new project include assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki, character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, story board artist Shinji Higuchi and composer Shirō Sagisu.
Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami, pilots of giant Evangelion cyborgs, are sent into in space to retrieve a container in which Evangelion Unit 01 and its pilot Shinji Ikari are sealed. When Asuka grabs the container with her Evangelion unit, it releases attack drones. Unit 01 awakens and destroys the drones, then deactivates and descends back to Earth. Kaworu Nagisa watches and says he has been waiting for Shinji.
The resuscitated skeleton of the Third Angel escapes its confinement and tries to break out of NERV's arctic Bethany Base, but Mari Illustrious Makinami, a new pilot, launches Evangelion Provisional Unit-05 and destroys the Angel by self-destructing the EVA and safely ejecting at the last moment.
In 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm known as the Second Impact, Shinji Ikari is summoned to Tokyo-3 by his estranged father Gendo, the commander of the mysterious NERV organization. Shinji is caught in the crossfire between UN forces and an angel, an alien lifeform, colonel Misato Katsuragi rescues him and brings him to NERV headquarters. Gendo demands Shinji pilot Evangelion Unit 01, a giant mecha cyborg, against the angel. Shinji concedes when Gendo threatens to send Rei Ayanami, a wounded Evangelion pilot, into battle instead. Shinji and wins the fight after Unit 01 goes berserk and destroys the Angel.
