As a young man, violinist Nasser Ali Khan (Mathieu Amalric) falls in love with Irâne (Golshifteh Farahani), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy shopkeeper. Her father forbids them to marry, convinced that an artist could never financially support his daughter. The dismayed musician could only carry on because his mentor gave him a special violin and advised him to sublimate his affliction. Consequently, he became a renowned artist and eventually married another woman. Nonetheless in his mind he is still with Irâne. When his lack of affection for his family leads to serious dispute between him and his wife she destroys his beloved violin. It strikes him he is no longer up to make music as he did before and therefore he is longing for death. After rejecting more conventional methods of suicide, he decides to simply lie in bed until death will have him. As he awaits the arrival of death, he is awash in visions of the past and the film lets the spectator accompany him on this bizarre and strangely beautiful journey.

Il présente ces femmes qui côtoient parfois la mort, qui passent du rire aux larmes, des femmes généreuses qui n'ont rien et qui le partagent, qui portent un passé douloureux et l'envie de construire un avenir heureux. En cherchant ce qui est commun dans leur regard, JR tente de se rapprocher de ce qui est universel : l’humain. Ce projet lui permet de tenir la promesse qu'il a faite à ces femmes : faire voyager leur histoire, leur redonner une place et montrer au monde qu'elles existent.

Dans les bars de Tel Aviv, la nuit, la réalisatrice demande à des jeunes Juifs s'ils auraient des relations sexuelles avec des Arabes, et à des jeunes Arabes s'ils feraient l'amour avec des Juifs. Chacun donne son avis, avec plus ou moins d'explications, sur le symbole que cela peut représenter pour eux (beaucoup l'ont déjà fait) ou au contraire leur refus. Des jeunes issus de familles mixtes (un parent juif, l'autre arabe) sont également interviewés. Le film recueille aussi les témoignages du journaliste Gideon Levy et de l'acteur Juliano Mer-Khamis, de mère juive et de père arabe, assassiné en 2011 par des Palestiniens à Jénine.

The story takes place in March 1944 in a small French village. The film follows notorious musician Serge Gainsbourg's exploits from his upbringing in Nazi occupied France through his rise to fame and love affairs with Juliette Gréco, Brigitte Bardot and marriage to Jane Birkin to his later experimentation with reggae in Jamaica. It also incorporates multiple elements of fantasy, most significantly with the character called "The Mug", an animated exaggeration of Gainsbourg that acts as his conscience (or anti-conscience) at crucial moments in Gainsbourg's life. The film also includes many of Gainsbourg's more famous songs, which serve as the soundtrack to the film and often serve as plot elements themselves.
