Add to a movie list1914 (German:1914, die letzten Tage vor dem Weltbrand) is a 1931 German drama film directed by Richard Oswald and starring Albert Bassermann, Hermann Wlach and Wolfgang von Schwindt. The film focuses on the leadership of the Great Powers of Europe in the days leading up to the outbreak of the First World War. It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios in Berlin and premiered in the city at the Tauentzien-Palast on 20 January 1931. At the request of the German Foreign Office an introduction by Eugene Fischer was filmed and presented at the start of the film. A special screening was held at the Reichstag on 3 March 1931.

Shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt is released from prison after many years of hard labor. His freedom is new to him and, as he tries to navigate this strange new world, he promptly finds himself in the midst of a Prussian catch-22: To get a residence permit (passport), he must have a job, but he can only get a job if he has a residence permit. No one in the Prussian-German bureaucracy feels compelled to help him, everything must go by the book. To escape this vicious circle, out of desperation Voigt breaks into a police station to forge the much needed permit.

L'aventurier italien Joseph Balsamo, plus connu sous le pseudonyme Cagliostro, s’introduit au sein de la noblesse française et même à la Cour du roi Louis XIV grâce à ses tours de magie. Après avoir fui l'Italie, où sa tête est mise à prix, le voici désormais en France où il épouse Lorena Féliciani qui lui permet d'approcher les plus hautes autorités françaises. Vindicatif, il prédit à Marie-Antoinette et il est aussitôt disgracié. Pour se venger, il monte l'affaire du collier de la reine avec l'usurpatrice Jeanne de La Motte-Valois, une aventurière qui se dit héritière de l'illustre famille des Valois, afin d'éclabousser la réputation de la reine intouchable. Elle est humiliée à cause de ce scandale et Jeanne est condamnée à mort. Pour éviter le même sort que sa complice, Cagliostro quitte la France et s'exile en Italie où il retrouve sa femme.

En septembre 1894, le service de renseignement français prend connaissance d'un incident d'espionnage à Paris. Des secrets militaires auraient été transmis à l'attaché militaire allemand à Paris, Maximilian von Schwartzkoppen. « Dans l'intérêt de l'armée », dit-on, le ministre de la Guerre Auguste Mercier doit rapidement trouver un coupable. Le 15 octobre de la même année, Alfred Dreyfus, capitaine au sein de l'état-major, d'origine juive, né en Alsace, jusqu'alors totalement innocent, est arrêté sur la base d'éléments de preuve légèrement construits. L'agitation antisémite dans la presse, l'armée et la politique crée rapidement un chaudron contre le traître présumé à Paris dans les années 1890.
