20th Century Boys (20世紀少年, 20-seiki shōnen) est le premier volet d'une trilogie et un film de science-fiction japonais de Yukihiko Tsutsumi sur le scénario de Yasushi Fukuda, Takashi Nagasaki, Naoki Urasawa et Yūsuke Watanabe d'après la série manga du même titre de Naoki Urasawa, avec les acteurs Toshiaki Karasawa dans le rôle de Kenji, Etsushi Toyokawa en Otcho et Takako Tokiwa en Yukiji. Ceci est sorti au Japon le 30 août 2008 et en France le 14 janvier 2009.

Ce film comprend l'adaptation des cinq premiers tomes de la série manga.

Synopsis

En 1969, Kenji et sa bande de copains passent leurs vacances d’été à rêver de l’exposition universelle d’Osaka et à s’inventer un scénario catastrophe de fin du monde dans leur cahier des prédictions. À cette époque, Kenji voulait devenir une rock star et sauver l’humanité. En 1997, Kenji aide sa mère dans la supérette de quartier tout en jouant la baby-sitter pour sa nièce Kanna. Ses rêves de gamin resurgissent lorsque la police le questionne sur une mystérieuse organisation dont le symbole serait identique à celui inventé dans le cahier des prédictions de sa jeunesse. Tous les indices mènent à une mystérieuse secte dont le chef se fait appeler Ami.

2015. Quinze ans se sont écoulés depuis le Nouvel An Sanglant qu'Ami a fait subir au monde en suivant le cahier des prédictions de la Bande à Kenji. L'histoire officielle raconte que Kenji et sa bande sont les terroristes à l'origine de cette apocalypse, tandis qu'Ami est vénéré dans le monde entier comme un sauveur. Il prédit la fin de l'humanité et annonce que ne seront sauvés que ceux qui croient en lui. Depuis la disparition de son oncle Kenji, Kanna mène une vie d'adolescente rebelle sous la tutelle de Yukiji qui peine à honorer sa promesse de veiller sur elle. Après des années de recherches, l'un des membres de la bande découvre l'existence d'un " Nouveau Cahier des Prédictions ", qui décrit entre autres cet événement : " En 2015, dans une église de Shinjuku, un sauveur se dressera pour défendre la justice et sera abattu par un assassin. " Qui est ce sauveur ? A nouveau, le jugement dernier s'approche.

The film begins by showing the inevitable outcome of the events of the film: the viewer is shown a scene of a man who is disabled by Alzheimer's Disease, set in the year 2010. The story proper then begins by switching back to an earlier stage in the life of the man, Masayuki Saeki in 2004. Masayuki Saeki is a brilliant and successful advertising company executive. Saeki is shown to be a prime example of an ideal Japanese white collar worker. He is strict, well organized, hard working, devoted to his job, and sets very high standards for himself and his subordinates. However he is soon shocked to realize that he is failing to meet up to his perfect standards. He starts inexplicably forgetting things - appointments, details of his work, and his knowledge of the layout of Tokyo. Following this he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, to which he reacts with great anger, disbelief and despair. What follows through the rest of the film is a tragic, emotional and very human portrayal of the suffering and the decline of this once powerful, soaring man to that of a pitiful state that resembles a second childhood as the disease wears him down. As the years pass, his memory worsens. He leaves work, and lives at home, where he is cared for by his devoted wife, Emiko. Inevitably, tensions surface between Masayuki and his wife and daughter, and it reaches the point where Emiko's life revolves around taking care of her debilitated husband.
