Synopsis
Le jour où il est licencié, Rob Harlan se lance dans l'écriture d'un roman. Contre toute attente, son livre ne tarde pas à connaître un énorme succès. Parti en tournée promotionnelle, Rob s'éloigne de plus en plus de sa femme et de sa fille, mettant son mariage en péril. Thora Birch stars as Liz Murray, one of two daughters of an extremely dysfunctional Bronx family. As a young girl, Murray lives with her sister, their drug-addicted, schizophrenic mother and their father, also a drug addict who is intelligent, but has AIDS, lacks social skills, and is not conscientious. She is removed from the home and put into the care system as her father cannot take care of her. At 15 she moves in with her mother, sister and Grandfather who sexually abused her mother. After a run-in with her Grandfather she runs away with a girl from school who is being abused at home. After her mother Jean Murray (1954-1996) dies of AIDS, which she got from sharing needles during her drug abuse, she gets a 'slap in the face' by her mother's death and begins her work to finish high school, which she amazingly completed in two years, rather than the usual four. She becomes a star student and earns a scholarship to Harvard University through an essay contest sponsored by The New York Times.

Maggie Baker (Blonsky) is an overweight 17-year-old girl who suffers being taunted and ridiculed at school and badgered to lose weight by her mother (Annie Potts) who is worried she will get diabetes like her late father. The movie starts by showing what Maggie goes through every day at school. We discover that her best friend Casey (Lily Holleman) is not as unpopular as Maggie due to her relationship with one of the popular guys. Casey is invited to a party by the boy and accepts the invite on the premise that Maggie is allowed to come as well. The popular boys cringe but don't say anything. At the party Casey is dragged away by her sort of boyfriend, leaving Maggie alone to be laughed at by the preppy clique, including Liz (Liz McGeever), a very hated but feared girl at school.
