Add to a movie listA Prophet (French: Un prophète) is a 2009 French prison drama directed by Jacques Audiard from a screenplay he co-wrote with Thomas Bidegain, Abdel Raouf Dafri and Nicolas Peufaillit. The film stars Tahar Rahim in the title role as an imprisoned petty criminal of Algerian origins who rises in the inmate hierarchy, as he initiates himself into the Corsican and then Muslim subcultures.
For Audiard, the film aims at "creating icons, images for people who don't have images in movies, like the Arabs in France," though he also had stated that the film "has nothing to do with his vision of society," and is a work of fiction.
The film won the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language and nine Césars (including Best Film, Director, Actor and Supporting Actor), in addition to the top 2009 prizes at both the Cannes Film Festival and the London Film Festival. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards.
Synopsis
Malik El Djebena, a 19-year-old French youth of Algerian descent, is sentenced to six years in prison for attacking police officers. Alone and illiterate upon his arrival, he falls under the sway of Corsican mobsters, led by Cesar Luciani, who enforces a brutal rule.Actors

Intense young "tough" Thomas Seyr is a 28-year-old real estate broker involved in shady business deals. His business partners, Fabrice and Sami, spend much of their time ruthlessly chasing squatters and illegal immigrants out of the buildings they have procured and trying to work their way around government housing regulations. Thomas is born to this kind of work; his father, Robert, is also involved in dodgy enterprises and sometimes calls upon Thomas to beat up people who refuse to pay. Tom shows a protective and defensive attitude toward his father who doesn't always appreciate what his son does for him–so much so that when his father introduces his new girlfriend to Tom, Tom undermines her to her face, and insults her to his father, insisting she is an opportunistic "whore." Later, when he tries to enlist her help to watch over his father, she tells him they broke up due to Robert changing his attitude and she is aware of Tom's backstabbing because Robert told her. Robert by this time is in danger from a Russian gangster, Minskov (Anton Yakovlev) who scammed him out of 300,000 Euros and Tom is worried for his safety.

Sivadhasan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan), is a Tamil Tiger soldier during the last days of the bloody Sri Lankan Civil war. After the armed conflict resolves, his side loses and he is forced to move to a refugee camp. There he decides to move to France to take a fresh chance at life. Zorah, pour faire le deuil de son fils, mort en France, décide de se rendre à Marseille pour comprendre ce qui s'est passé. Elle réussit à devenir la nounou de Céline, la sœur de François, l'amant et meurtrier de son fils. François est en prison et attend son jugement. Elsa et Stéphane forment un couple à la dérive qui vit toujours chez les parents de ce dernier. Elle se prostitue à l'occasion et Stéphane vit de petits boulots qu'il ne réussit pas même à remplir. Il rencontre Pierre, un truand local, qui, frappé par son extrême ressemblance avec un ami incarcéré, lui propose de prendre sa place en prison lors d'une visite au parloir. Stéphane, hésitant, finit par accepter la proposition contre une forte somme d'argent. Laure, une jeune adolescente de 16 ans, tombe amoureuse d'Alexandre, un jeune délinquant au grand cœur qui se met fréquemment dans diverses bagarres. À la suite de l'une d'elles, il est emprisonné pour coups et blessures sur les forces de l'ordre. Laure pour pouvoir lui rendre visite en prison trouve le subterfuge d'être accompagné par Antoine, un jeune interne en médecine qui devient son ami.
