Une attaque suicide tue 15 personnes dans un supermarché de Kansas City. L'enquête conclut que les kamikazes ont été aidés par des passeurs de clandestins à la frontière américano-mexicaine, une région aux mains des trafiquants de drogues. En mission à Djibouti et en Somalie, Matt Graver est à nouveau envoyé dans cette région, pour une mission orchestrée dans l'ombre par la CIA. Matt fait une nouvelle fois appel à Alejandro Gillick, le sicaire avec lequel il a lutté contre le cartel de Juárez. Sous les ordres non officiels du Secrétaire à la Défense, Matt doit créer une guerre entre les cartels pour que ces derniers s'autodétruisent. Après avoir assassiné un avocat du gang des Matamoros à Mexico, Gillick et Matt kidnappent Isabela, la fille du chef de cartel Carlos Reyes, lors d'une opération sous fausse bannière. Toutefois, les choses ne se passent pas comme prévu et Gillick se retrouve rapidement seul à devoir lutter pour sa survie et celle d'Isabela, abandonnés par le gouvernement américain et traqués par les cartels mexicains.

In Italy burden of the economic crisis three men in Rome: Ulisse, Fulvio and Domenico decide to rent an apartment together in order to live with their modest work. However the three encounter any difficulties that have forced them to always be one step away from starvation. Ulisse has to maintain his wife and daughter selling recordings of important foreign singers, Fulvio has the task of reviewing silly scandals of celebrities instead of writing articles for major artists, while Domenico must keep his wife and children going to make love with old single pensioners. At the end of the story the three, despite all the difficulties, able to have a little luck in their lives.

Under the watchful eyes of Father Silvano Bentivoglio (Carmen Argenziano) and Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) initiates the Large Hadron Collider and creates three vials of antimatter particles larger than any that have ever been produced before. Almost immediately, Father Silvano is killed and one of the vials of antimatter goes missing. At the same time, the Roman Catholic Church is mourning the sudden death of Pope Pius XVI in Rome and prepares for the papal conclave to elect the next Pope. The Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) assumes temporary control of the Vatican. The Illuminati kidnap four of the 'preferiti' (the favourite cardinals to be elected pope) before the conclave enters seclusion and threaten to kill one candidate every hour and destroy all of Vatican City at midnight, using the missing vial of antimatter as a bomb. The Vatican summons symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) from Harvard University and Vittoria from CERN to help them save the four preferiti and locate the vial.

In 1960s Rome, four young delinquents, nicknamed Cold, Lebanese, Dandi and Grand steal a car. Crashing through a police road block, the driver, Grand is crushed by the steering column. Back at their hideout, a small disused caravan near a beach, they are discovered by the police. Cold, Lebanese and Dandi run away, but are captured. Grand, who is mortally wounded, dies in the caravan. Roll opening credits. Some years later, in the 1970s, Cold is released from prison and joins up with Lebanese, who tells him he has come up with a plan to kidnap and hold to ransom Baron Rossellini, a wealthy aristocrat for whom Lebanese's parents worked. He has formed a gang with Dandi - they are Black, Bright Eye, Ricotta, Bufalo, Rat and Ciro and Aldo Buffoni. After negotiating the ransom of 3 billion lire, the Baron is shot by one of the Cannizzari brothers who have been entrusted by Lebanese to guard him. Nonetheless, they fake the proof of life and get the 3 billion lire. However, the local Police Commissioner Nicola Scialoja manages to record the serial numbers of the ransom money before the gang receive it, setting out to capture the gang. As the gang divide up the money, Lebanese proposes to split 500 million lire between them, and use the remaining 2.5 billion to build a foothold in the criminal underworld of Rome, starting with drug dealing. However, the drugs racket is owned by the dealer Terrible, and so the gang wipe his gang out apart from Gemito, who Lebanese bribes to help them. After his home is raided and his body guards killed, Terrible wakes to find Cold, Lebanese and Dandi in his bedroom. Cornered, he reluctantly agrees to let give control of the racket to the gang.

Au début des années 1980, une guerre interne fait rage au sein de Cosa nostra. Menacé, Tommaso Buscetta, membre important de la mafia palermitaine, se réfugie sous un faux nom au Brésil, pays dont sa femme est originaire, mais il est arrêté par la police brésilienne, puis extradé en Italie. Sa famille (notamment deux de ses fils) et ses alliés continuant d'être décimés par le clan des Corléonais, il décide de collaborer avec la justice, représentée par le juge Giovanni Falcone. En brisant l'omertà, il devient un traître, mais sauve sa vie, se venge et permet au juge Falcone auquel il fait de nombreuses révélations sur l'organisation et les crimes de Cosa nostra de lutter contre elle. Cette coopération aboutit quelques années plus tard au Maxi-Procès de Palerme qui voit la condamnation de plusieurs centaines de mafieux.
