Synopsis
Nord du Japon, vers 1670. Sous le nom d'Akanishi Kakita, un homme au physique disgracieux aimant son chat et le shōgi est en réalité un espion chargé de surveiller les agissements dans le clan Date pour le compte du chef du clan Katakura. Ayant réussi à déjouer une tentative d'assassinat et intercepter des courriers compromettants, il cherche un prétexte pour quitter la résidence du seigneur Date Hyōbu sans éveiller les soupçons. Son acolyte Aozame Masujirō lui conseille d'écrire une lettre d'amour à Sazanami, la plus belle femme de la résidence Date pour devenir la risée de ses compagnons et ainsi obtenir une justification à son départ. Mais comble de malchance, la belle répond favorablement à ses avances l'obligeant à "oublier" une autre lettre pour qu'elle soit découverte et qu'il puisse profiter du stratagème. Soupçonneux, le seigneur Kai Harada se doute de quelque chose et envoie une troupe à sa poursuite, mais celle-ci échoue à le retrouver.Actors

Yamato Teruo (Isamu Kosugi) returns to Japan after spending six years at an agricultural college in Germany. Teruo is the adopted son of an old samurai family, and is expected to marry the eldest daughter, Mitsuko (Setsuko Hara). However, Teruo has become infected with the idea of Western individualism during his stay in Europe, and refuses to bow to the demands of society. Instead, he confounds his future father-in-law Yamato Iwao (Sessue Hayakawa) by announcing that he intends to marry a German journalist, Gerda Storm (Ruth Eweler), whom he met on the ship back to Japan. Gerda, however, is a blond, chaste, Aryan woman, and will not agree to a mixed-race relationship. Oharu is the daughter of Kyōsai Shimura, a rōnin who now makes his living making umbrellas. She is in love with another rōnin, Reisaburō Asai, who lives next door, but he is being pursued by two of the town beauties, Otomi and Fujio. In 1185, the Heike family fights against the Minamoto family. After a bloody naval battle in the Pacific Ocean, Yoshitsune Minamoto defeats the enemy and the survivors commit suicide. When the triumphant Yoshitsune arrives in Kyoto, his brother, the Shogun Yoritomo, is uneasy and orders his men to arrest Yoshitsune. However, Yoshitsune escapes with six loyal samurai led by Benkei and they head to the country of his only friend Hidehira Fujiwara. Near the border, after crossing the forest disguised as monks, their porter discovers that they are Yoshitsune and the six samurais and advises that the fearful Kajiwara and his soldiers are waiting for them in the border to arrest them. Yoshitsune disguises as a porter and at the barrier at the border, Benkei has to convince Kajiwara that they are six monks traveling to collect donation to build a large temple in Kyoto.

Torajiro Kuruma (Kiyoshi Atsumi), returns for the first time in 20 years to the neighborhood where he was born, Shibamata in Katsushika, Tokyo, He comes back in the middle of Taishakuten temple's Koshin Shinko Festival. While Sakura and Hiroshi get married, Tora's relationship with Fuyuko is fleeting, as she is engaged to another man. Broken-hearted, Torajiro leaves after writing a letter of advice for Fuyuko, asking her to help take care of his sister and her new baby.

The film begins with two bedraggled peasants, Tahei and Matashichi (Minoru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara). Through conversation, they reveal that they had intended to fight alongside the Yamana clan, but turned up too late, were taken for soldiers of the defeated Akizuki clan, and forced to bury the dead. After quarreling and splitting up, the two are both captured again and forced to dig for gold in the Akizuki castle with other prisoners.

Nine young samurai, including his nephew, believe that the lord chamberlain, Mutsuta, is corrupt after he tore up their petition against organised crime and said maybe he himself was behind the crimes. One of them tells the superintendent of this and he agrees to intervene. As the nine meet secretly at a shrine and discuss their problem, a ronin (Mifune) emerges from another room where he has been resting. The ronin has overheard their plans, and suggests that the superintendent is in fact the real corrupt official. While at first the samurai are insulted by his claims, they soon find themselves surrounded by the superintendent's men, proving that he was correct. The ronin hits a few of the attackers and bluffs their leader into leaving, taking only a small amount of money in reward to buy food because he is starving; however, after realizing that Mutsuta and his family must now be in danger, he decides to help the samurai bring down the corrupt officials.

Jirozaemon est un riche et honnête fabricant de soie qui avait été abandonné à la naissance par une famille inconnue mais sans doute aisée. Il est affecté d'une cicatrice au visage dont l'extrême laideur fait fuir les femmes. Comme il souhaite une épouse coûte que coûte, des clients lui arrangent des rencontres : en vain. Ils décident un jour de distraire le malheureux en l'emmenant à Yoshiwara, le quartier des plaisirs de Edo (ancien nom de Tokyo). Là-bas, même les geishas ne veulent pas lui tenir compagnie. Seule Tamatsuru, une prostituée de bas-étage sortant de prison et décidée à monter dans la hiérarchie sociale, accepte la compagnie du « monstre ». Celui-ci s'en émeut. Elle lui promet le mariage s'il l'aide à devenir « première courtisane ». Jirozaemon se ruine pour elle, à un moment où son entreprise traverse une mauvaise passe, avant de réaliser que le tout Yoshiwara s'est moqué de lui.
