Dafoe plays a seasoned detective named Stan Aubray, who notices that a case he has been assigned to bears a striking similarity to a previous case of his. The film is based on the concept of anamorphosis, a painting technique that manipulates the laws of perspective to create two competing images on a single canvas.
Dafoe turned down the role initially but reconsidered after a chance meeting with producer Marissa McMahon on a flight from Los Angeles. The film also has cameo appearances by Mick Foley and Debbie Harry.
The film had its world premiere at the 2007 Milwaukee International Film Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where star Willem Dafoe started out in theater. It was also shown at the Williamstown Film Festival in November the same year. The film opened in New York City on April 18, 2008 and in Los Angeles on May 2, 2008.
Synopsis
L'inspecteur Stan Aubray enquête sur un meurtre. Le mode opératoire du tueur ressemble étrangement à celui observé lors d'une affaire récente. In Virginia, a rancher discovers dead bodies over his farm and decides to investigate. As he finds more bodies, he is killed by one of the assailants himself. Meanwhile, attackers use special explosives to break into an NSA bunker beneath the horse farm. There, NSA Agent Augustus Gibbons fends off the attackers before barely escaping himself. Sergeant Alabama "Bama" Cobb is later revealed to be responsible for the attack on the bunker. After escaping the attack, Toby Shavers, Gibbons's assistant, informs that, with the attack on the NSA bunker, Cobb also had Xander Cage, the XXX agent, assassinated in Bora Bora. To find a new substitute, Gibbons meets with Lt. Darius Stone (Ice Cube), a former U.S Navy officer, who is currently serving 9 of his 20 years sentence in Leavenworth for disobeying orders and breaking General George Deckert's jaw, who is now a rogue Secretary of Defense.

Based on the true story of Lizzie Borden, a Sunday School teacher who lived with her father Andrew, her stepmother Abby, and her older sister Emma in a small house in Fall River, Massachusetts, the film depicts a hot summer day in August 1892 in the Borden home where Lizzie comes across the grisly murder scene of her father who was brutally killed with a hatchet. After local law enforcement responds to the scene, the body of Abby Borden is discovered upstairs, also killed with an ax. As the case progresses, the evidence gathered by the authorities seems to point to Lizzie as their prime suspect. Lizzie's lawyer Andrew Jennings, however, maintains that a woman could not commit such a cruel act; arguing it is far too gruesome a crime for any woman to commit. Regardless, Lizzie is put on trial for the murders and the courtroom case makes headlines in newspapers throughout the country. Newspaper accounts state the crime to be the most infamous of the century. Eventually, the jury finds Lizzie innocent of all charges. The film ends with a fight between Emma and Lizzie, in which Lizzie asks Emma if she wanted know the truth. Lizzie then whispers inaudibly into Emma's ear while a series of flashbacks are shown in which Lizzie murders their stepmother and father. It is heavily implied that Lizzie Borden was in fact their murderer, and a visibly upset Emma leaves the room. Lizzie walks outside and hears three children jump roping to the famous nursery rhyme: "Lizzie Borden took an ax/ And gave her mother forty wacks/ And when she saw what she had done/ She gave her father forty-one." Emma is then shown leaving the house, never to return.

Ray Dolezal, a bored Torrance County, New Mexico Deputy Sheriff, investigates an apparent suicide in the desert. Alongside the body is a suitcase containing $500,000. At a police station in Niagara Falls, Ontario, new detective Jeffrey Cornwall is sitting down for a job interview with Nicole Dunlop who works in the Internet Child Exploitation Unit. He recoils in disgust after seeing the images related to open cases and Nicole tells him that these are the images he will have to see every day. Meanwhile, Niagara Falls resident Matthew Lane picks his nine year old daughter Cassandra up from the arena after her figure skating practice. He comments that her wearing one white skate and one black skate is an unnecessary gimmick given her skill. On the way back, Matthew stops to pick up pie, leaving Cassandra in the car. Minutes later he returns to find her missing and calls out to no success. He reports the abduction to the police station where Dunlop and Cornwall are assigned to the case. Cassandra's mother Tina Lane arrives and breaks down in a fit of fury directed at Matthew.
