Il s'agit du premier long métrage de fiction de Jacques Malaterre, qui avait réalisé précédemment des docu-fictions sur la Préhistoire et l'évolution de l'homme, notamment L'Odyssée de l'espèce, Homo sapiens et Le Sacre de l'homme.
Synopsis
Pendant trois cent mille ans, les Néandertaliens ont occupé l'Europe, mais leur espèce tend à disparaître : elle ne compte qu’un seul représentant, Ao. Son clan ayant été anéanti par des Homo sapiens, Ao commence à errer, sans cesse poursuivi par la vision de son frère Oa et décidé à revenir dans son vieux clan paternel. Il est capturé par une tribu d’Homo sapiens hostiles et fait la connaissance d’Aki, une femme Homo sapiens prisonnière. Tous les deux réussissent à s'échapper et avec le temps, après la méfiance et la suspicion que la femme avait initialement éprouvé envers cet homme différent, Ao et Aki commencent à se connaître et à se comprendre. À la fin Ao découvre qu'il est le dernier des Néandertaliens, mais il lui reste sa compagne, Aki, et les fruits de leur amour : sa petite fille et un nouvel enfant qui s’annonce.Actors

En Camargue, José, un bandit de grand chemin, rencontre Carmen, une belle gitane, à la sortie d'une manufacture. Paleontologist Zack takes his nephew Ricky and niece Jade on a fossil hunt, giving the sullen Ricky his Gorgosaurus tooth while he and Jade go to the fossil bed. Alone, Ricky is met by a talking rook, who morphs into Alex the Alexornis bird, who takes the story back to the Cretaceous period 70 million years ago. Patchi is the smallest of his litter of Pachyrhinosaurus hatchlings, and is often bullied by his large, proud older brother Scowler. Their father Bulldust is the leader of the herd. Patchi is attacked by a Troodon and receives a distinctive hole in his frill when he ventures outside the nest one morning. Alex, serving as Patchi's mentor, tries to help Patchi impress a female Pachyrhinosaurus named Juniper, but her herd soon migrates south without him. Bulldust soon follows suit, moving his herd to the south, but when they try to pass through a dense forest, they are forced to flee when a forest fire erupts. Taking advantage of the chaos, Gorgon the predatory Gorgosaurus attacks the fleeing Pachyrhinosaurus, and while his pack kills their mother and siblings, Patchi and Scowler witness Gorgon killing Bulldust.

Littlefoot and his friends have recently arrived in the Great Valley. The children are living happily in their new home, under their families' watchful eyes. When the gang tries to get to the sheltering grass to play, but land in the sinking sand surrounding it, the grownups come and save them and chastise them for disobeying the rules: "don't cross the sinking sand without help." Cera then tells the others that they need to prove they are independent by running away for a while into the Mysterious Beyond, a location just outside the valley. Before they leave, they notice two egg nappers stealing an egg from Ducky's nest. They chase them into the Beyond, during which a landslide occurs. The egg rolls safely back to the nest, but the five are under the impression that it was destroyed in the landslide. This upsets Ducky until she notices what looks like the egg, only slightly larger.

Littlefoot's grandfather one night tells the children a story about "The Lone Dinosaur" (a pun on The Lone Ranger), a legendary longneck who once protected the Great Valley from the most ferocious sharptooth ever to live. A fight ensued, which led to the Sharptooth's death. However, the sharptooth left "The Lone Dinosaur" with a scar slashed across his right eye. Soon after the battle, a huge monolith that resembled a proud sauropod, having life-sized Sharptooth teeth arranged around his neck, came out of the ground during an earthshake. The dinosaurs called it "Saurus Rock". The legend also states that if anyone damages the monolith, bad luck would descend upon the valley.

Petrie is having a difficult time preparing for "The Day of the Flyers", an important day for all of the flying residents of the Great Valley, when all of the young flyers must participate in a very precise flying exhibition to prove that they are ready to fly with the adults. Always a nervous flyer, Petrie has even more trouble flying with his siblings in precise group formations — he’s more of an independent, free-style flier with a spirit of gold. At the same time, a strange newcomer to the Great Valley has Littlefoot and his friends trying to help figure out just exactly what he is. Named Guido, a Feathered Flyer, he's the strangest looking creature any of the Great Valley creatures has ever seen, especially since he’s covered with feathers, and has never seen another like himself. Thankfully, the dinosaurs have overcome their prejudices like seven movies ago and they don't make fun of Guido's weird face. Cera is having her own troubles, as her grumpy father and his new lover (which is the most accurate term, since Littlefoot's dad established that dinosaurs don't marry - they only hit it and quit it), Tria, get ready to welcome a hatchling to the family.

After Andy Flynn destroyed the original Sharktopus (a half-shark half-octopus creature), its various pieces floated back out into the ocean. However, among the scattered anatomy was an egg sack and marine biologist Lorena finds herself the ward of the creature's sole offspring which she begins raising at her uncle's aquarium to mixed success. Meanwhile, Dr. Rico Symes is hard at work on his own biological weapon. After harvesting a pterodactyl's DNA, he used the DNA from a barracuda to fill in the gaps, creating a monster that can terrorize land, sea, and air. Things are looking pretty good during the initial test flight until the creature is hijacked by a rogue engineer, looking to sell it the highest bidder. He probably would have gotten away with it if he didn't spill his coffee all over his console, but now the Pteracuda is free to rampage the coast in search of food.
