It was directed by Lewis Milestone and is based on the 1945 novel Arch of Triumph by Erich Maria Remarque, which he wrote during his nine-year exile in the United States.
Synopsis
Pre-World War II Paris is crowded with illegal refugees, trying to evade deportation. One of them is Dr. Ravic (Charles Boyer), who under a false name practices medicine illegally, helping other refugees. He saves Joan Madou (Ingrid Bergman) from committing suicide after the sudden death of her lover. They become involved, but he is deported and she becomes the mistress of a wealthy man, Alex (Stephen Bekassy). All this time Ravic seeks revenge against the Nazi officer Haake (Charles Laughton), with war eventually declared between France and Germany.Actors

In 1943, the diverse group of fifty-three soldiers comprising a lead Platoon of the Texas Division anxiously await their upcoming Allied invasion of Italy on a beach near Salerno, Italy. A landing barge carries them to their objective during the pre-dawn hours, and the increasing danger of their situation is demonstrated when their young platoon leader, Lieutenant Rand (Robert Lowell), is wounded by a shell fragment that destroys half of his face. Platoon Sergeant Pete Halverson (Matt Willis) takes over command and orders Sgt. In April 1942, after a raid on Japan, eight American aircrew made up of the crews from two North American B-25 Mitchell bombers, are captured. Capt. Harvey Ross (Dana Andrews), becomes the leader of the captives. Initially, the men are picked up by a local government official who is a Chinese collaborator in a Wang Jingwei controlled section of China. The Chinese official delivers the Americans to the Imperial Japanese Army to be put on trial at the Shanghai Police Headquarters. Although international observers and correspondents are allowed to witness the trial, the commanding officer, General Mitsubi (Richard Loo) refuses to allow Karl Kappel (Torben Meyer), the Swiss Consul to contact Washington.

In 1941, at a staff meeting in Washington, D.C., two officers of the U.S. Army Air Corps (and old friends) debate the importance of bombardiers. Major "Chick" Davis (Pat O'Brien) argues that a bombardier, using the top secret American bombsight will be the "spearhead of our striking force." After a year of observing the Royal Air Force fight the German Luftwaffe, Capt. "Buck" Oliver (Randolph Scott) is not convinced a bomber can get "so close that a bomb can't miss" and that new pilots are the priority. Davis challenges Oliver to a "bombing duel" to test their respective points of view. Oliver, using a dive bomber, misses the stationary target with all his bombs, while Davis, bombing from 20,000 feet in a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, succeeds in hitting his target with his first bomb.

O'Hara, un mercenaire altruiste au service de Wu se porte volontaire pour faire passer une importante somme d'argent devant permettre aux opposants au général Yang de se procurer des armes par l'intermédiaire d'un trafiquant alcoolique nommé Brighton. L'américain Peter Perrie vit avec sa fille Judy en Chine. Il se propose de livrer O'Hara à Yang, sa fille devant servir d'appât, puis d'acheter lui-même des armes pour le compte de Yang auprès de Brighton. Peter Perrie est atteint d'un mal incurable en phase terminale et rêve de finir ses jours aux États-Unis. Dans le train Judy séduit O'Hara et réussit sa mission : O'Hara est gardé prisonnier par Chang, au grand désespoir de Judy qui est réellement tombée amoureuse d'O'Hara. Ce dernier s'évade, retrouve Judy à son hôtel, et veut lui faire avouer où est caché l'argent, mais elle refuse, car son père convoite le butin. Peter Perrie intervient et meurt à la suite d'un échange de coups de feu. Le général Wang surgit et fait prisonnier O'Hara, Judy, Wu, et un maître chanteur ; il les emmène sur son bateau. Judy propose alors de se sacrifier contre la promesse que les autres prisonniers seront délivrés ; mais entre-temps, Brighton, qui était retenu à fond de cale, se réveille de son ivresse en provoquant un tel chahut que Yang se déplace, recevant un coup de couteau mortel dans la confusion. Yang mourant veut faire exécuter tout le monde : il commence par le maître chanteur, mais O'Hara le dissuade de continuer lui expliquant que dans ces conditions tout le monde oubliera le grand général Yang. Ce dernier avant de succomber demande alors à sa garde de s’entre-tuer.

In April 1953, during the Korean War, a company of American infantry, led by Lieutenant Joe Clemons (Gregory Peck) are to recapture Pork Chop Hill from a larger Communist Chinese army force; they recapture the hill, but are depleted, only 25 of a 135-man unit are left.
