1884. La militante féministe, Toshiko Kishida se rend à Okayama, où Eiko Hirayama a fondé une école destinée à promouvoir une conception neuve du rôle de la femme dans la société japonaise. Eiko découvre, par exemple, que Chiyo, la fille des domestiques de sa propre famille, a été vendue à un habitant de Tokyo. Hélas, l'école de Eiko est bientôt fermée par les autorités. Elle se voit contrainte de partir pour Tokyo afin de se rendre au siège du Parti libéral, pourtant menacé de dissolution. Là, elle devient chroniqueuse pour le journal du Parti et se lie avec Kentaro Omoi, le responsable du mouvement. Elle va enquêter, notamment, sur la révolte des fermiers de la soie à Chichibu. Ceux-ci luttent, en particulier, contre les terribles conditions de travail imposées aux ouvrières des filatures. Eiko assiste à l'esclavage de ces femmes qui, de plus, sont souvent battues, torturées voire violées. Parmi celles-ci, elle reconnaît Chiyo. Cette dernière vient précisément d'incendier un bâtiment. Omoi, Eiko et Chiyo sont tous trois accusés de complicité et arrêtés. Chiyo, enceinte, se donne à un gardien dans l'espoir d'obtenir un moyen d'évasion. Au lieu de cela, elle est violemment frappée et son bébé mourra. Plus tard, Eiko apprend qu'Omoi, qui désire l'épouser, a aussi pour maîtresse Chiyo. Omoi trouve cette situation normale. Eiko comprend, dès lors, qu'il y a beaucoup à faire pour modifier la mentalité masculine japonaise. Mais, persévérante, elle continue son combat, d'autant que le contexte politique, désormais plus favorable, lui permet de rouvrir son école à Okayama. Dans le train qui la ramène vers sa ville natale, Eiko est rejointe par Chiyo.

Professor Shukichi Somiya (Chishu Ryu), a widower, has only one child, a twenty-seven-year-old unmarried daughter, Noriko (Setsuko Hara), who takes care of the household and the everyday needs—cooking, cleaning, mending, etc.—of her father. On a shopping trip to Tokyo, Noriko encounters one of her father's friends, Professor Jo Onodera (Masao Mishima), who lives in Kyoto. Noriko knows that Onodera, who had been a widower like her father, has recently remarried, and she tells him that she finds the very idea of his remarriage distasteful, even "filthy." Onodera, and later her father, tease her for having such thoughts.

Le film est une chronique de la vie quotidienne dans un centre de redressement pour enfants difficiles composé de seize maisons. Chacune d'elles est gérée par un couple marié qui fait office de parents de substitution et d'éducateurs à la douzaine d'enfants qui leur sont confiés. La dernière arrivée au centre est Tamiko, une jeune fille capricieuse dont le père M. Sakata, veuf et trop accaparé par son travail, ne peut plus gérer les excès. Tamiko est confiée aux bons soins de M Natsumura. Entre bagarres, fugues et désobéissances, les enfants mènent la vie dure aux éducateurs mais ils montrent un étonnant sens de l'entraide lorsque le directeur du centre leur confie un travail pharaonique consistant à creuser un canal permettant d'amener de l'eau au centre qui n'était jusqu'alors pourvu que d'un insuffisant vieux puits.

After a volcanic eruption on Daikoku Island, the Yahata-Maru Japanese fishing vessel is caught in strong currents off its shores. As the boat drifts into shore, the island begins to erupt, and a giant monster lifts itself out of the volcano. A few days later, reporter Goro Maki is sailing in the area and finds the vessel intact but deserted. As he explores the vessel, he finds all the crew dead except for one young man called Hiroshi Okamura, who has been badly wounded. Suddenly a giant Shockirus sea louse attacks him but he is saved by Maki who kills it with a cleaver.

Three middle-aged friends and former college mates – Mamiya (Shin Saburi), Taguchi (Nobuo Nakamura) and Hirayama (Ryuji Kita) – meet up for the 7th memorial service of a late college friend, Miwa. Miwa's widow Akiko (Setsuko Hara) and 24-year-old daughter Ayako (Yoko Tsukasa) are also present. The three friends remark amongst themselves how good Akiko looks despite being in her forties.
