Banaras: A Mystic Love Story is the name of an Indian Bollywood film directed by Pankaj Parashar released in 2006. The film takes place in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi (the city, once known as Banaras, serves as a destination for the pilgrimage of millions of Hindu worshippers annually) and is centered on the relationship of a young woman with her parents and her lover. The storyline also has a strong religious dimension. Most of the film was shot in Varanasi, with some scenes shot in Mauritius.

Synopsis

A young woman, Shwetambari is the daughter to wealthy parents, Mahendranath and Gayatri Devi and respectively) and studies at university in the city. She falls in love with a low-caste mystic named Soham (played by Ashmit Patel).

Indu (Shabana Azmi) and DK (Naseeruddin Shah) have a happy marriage and two daughters — Rinky and Minni — and live in Delhi. The tranquility of their life is interrupted when DK receives word that he has a son, the result of an affair with Bhavana (Supriya Pathak) during his visit to Nainital when his wife Indu was about to give birth to their first child Rinky. Bhavana did not tell DK about their son as she did not want to disturb DK's matrimonial life. Now that she has died, her guardian Masterji sends word to DK informing him that his son, Rahul (Jugal Hansraj), who is eight years old, needs a home. Despite the objections of Indu, who is devastated to learn of her husband's infidelity, DK brings the boy to stay with them in Delhi. Rahul is never told that DK is his father as he bonds with DK and his daughters. But Indu can't bear to look at him, a tangible reminder of DK's betrayal.

Narasimha, a young and captive man, lives a middle class life with his family in a quiet neighborhood. He gets his beautiful sister married to an eligible young man in their vicinity. On the occasion of his sister giving birth, he returns home to find a communal conflict arise between his neighborhood which spreads in the whole city. He seeks refuge in a dwelling area nearby only to return and find out his whole family has been murdered. With no aim left in life Narsimha decides to turn to crime and alcohol. He later decides to work for a man called Suraj Narayan Singh aka Bapji who is a big goonlord and capitalist of the city and basically controls the law and order of the city and rules over it using muscle power and his immense wealth . Bapji was delighted to get hold of a man like Narsimha who has wits and also muscle power but has lost desire to live and hence Narsimha executes his most difficult works which others cant accomplish. Bapji believes that he has become invincible and nobody can dare protest him since he has the city under his complete subjugation. He considers Narsimha as a weapon which can unlock his most difficult problems and a Narsimha, who is completely dejected from life, accomplishes them without asking any questions. Narsimha remains drunk full day and only comes when summoned by Bapji to execute Bapji's assignments and receive his payments.

Sunder Srivastava (Shahrukh Khan) is a young graduate whose main ambition in life is to fulfill his father's dream of starting a school on his half-acre property in his village, though he has no funds to execute his plans. Raja Mishra (Saif Ali Khan) gatecrashes into a marriage while trying to escape from a brawl. While in process of seducing the mujra dancer, Raja overhears a plot by Lallan Tiwari (Chunky Pandey) to execute everyone in the wedding upon instructions from a land lord wanting to use Rudra's uncle's land for poppy farming. Raja warns everyone about the impending attack and Raja and Rudra fight off the attacking Lallan Singh's gang. Rudra's uncle (Sharat Saxena) sees the potential in Raja and Rudra forming an alliance for offering protection to political personalities and offers them to join his gang. Not wanting to enter the world of politics, they refuse and Rudra's uncle advices them to take refuge from Lallan's gang in jail. In a later incident Rudra's uncle is killed by the poppy field owner with help of Lallan Singh.
