Synopsis
Barney Panofsky is living with his best friend Boogie (Speedman) in Rome. He marries the mentally disturbed and unfaithful Clara Charnofsky (Lefevre) after she tells him she is pregnant with his child. Barney later finds out the child is not his, and he demands they separate. Clara commits suicide, and a devastated Barney decides to return home to Montreal.Actors

In the Lower East Side of New York City in 1903, a group of Jewish men are gathered in the shop of a cobbler to discuss a problem that has been plaguing them. A crook named Gergerman has been running their businesses out and harassing the men and their families. The men hand over a pair of Gergerman's shoes to the cobbler, Pinchas Simkin. Pinchas takes the shoes to the basement of his shop and uses a special stitching machine to work on the shoes. His young son Herschel enters, and Pinchas explains to him the importance of the machine.

Thomas "Babe" Levy (Dustin Hoffman) is a history Ph.D. candidate and avid runner. Rien ne va plus pour le Directeur des Ressources Humaines de la plus grande boulangerie de Jérusalem : il s’est séparé de sa femme, sa fille le boude et il est empêtré dans un boulot qu’il déteste. C’est le début d’un périple qui l'entraîne des rues mystiques de Jérusalem à la glaciale Roumanie, à la recherche du village de Yulia, cette femme qu’il ne connaissait pas mais qu’il apprend petit à petit à admirer. A la tête d’un convoi chaotique, entre le fils de la défunte, en révolte contre tous, un exaspérant journaliste, une consule excentrique et un encombrant cercueil, le DRH retrouve son humanité et sa vraie capacité à s’occuper des « ressources humaines ».
