Beefcake (1999) is a docu-drama homage to the muscle magazines of the 1940s, '50s, and '60s—in particular, Physique Pictorial magazine, published quarterly by Bob Mizer of the Athletic Model Guild. It was inspired by a picture book by F. Valentine Hooven III (published by Taschen) and was directed by Thom Fitzgerald.

The film stars Daniel MacIvor, Carroll Godsman, Jack Griffin Mazieka, Jonathan Torrens, and Joshua Peace in pastiche recreations of life at the Athletic Model Guild, mixed with interviews with models and photographers whose work actually appeared in the early magazines, including Jack LaLanne and Joe Dallesandro. The film was shot in Nova Scotia.

Beefcake premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999 and was released by Strand Releasing in the USA; it was nominated for three Genie Awards.

Synopsis

États-Unis, années 40. Dans une étonnante propriété se côtoient quantité d’hommes (presque) nus qui batifolent autour de la piscine. Ce décor, c’est celui dans lequel évolue Bob Mizer, fondateur de « The Athletic Model Guild », un magazine de photos où les hommes posent nus ou presque. Jack Lalane, Joe Dallessandro et Wayne Stanley, anciens modèles de Mizer, témoignent chacun à leur manière de leur expérience. Pour la plupart d’entre eux, Bob Mizer dotait la jeunesse américaine d’un bréviaire de la forme et de la santé sans aucune intention homoérotique. Des procès furent pourtant engagés et une chasse aux sorcières organisée contre ces photographes jugés scandaleux. Mêlant allégrement documents d’archives et scènes de fiction délirantes, ce documentaire est à la fois l’histoire d’un homme et celle d’une époque.

A group of young men in Africa, undergo a rite of passage symbolizing their change from boyhood into manhood. In rural China, a heavily pregnant Jin Ping is caught by Chinese military men with crates of black market blood in her van. The blood is destroyed and she is subsequently gang raped. Jin Ping is then shown visiting a village and convincing the inhabitants to give blood for $5 each. They all agree, except Tong Sam, a rice farmer, as he is unable to give blood as he is sick. However, as Jin Ping's equipment is not safe, most of the people in the village contract HIV and die of AIDS, including Tong Sam's family. The military men led by Xuan arrive in the village to help with the disease, and they help Tong Sam grow rice, which he then gives out to his remaining neighbors. Government officials arrive in the town to test people for AIDS, but the testing is $10 per person, which one neighbor thinks is a scam because it "cost $5 when she gave me the virus.
