The film score was by composer Harris Jayaraj, shot by cinematographer R. D. Rajasekhar, and edited by Anthony. The film was released on 14 January 2008, after two years of production delays, to mixed reviews. The release coincides with the Thai Pongal harvest festival in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Synopsis
The story follows a tug of war between two underworld gangs trying to outsmart each other. Chinna’s (Prakash Raj) gang, the smaller of the two, struggles to overtake Periyavar’s (Raghuvaran) gang until a man named Sekar (Vikram) gives Chinna’s gang new life. Sekar is a man of steel, physically and mentally, who had idolised Chinna in his childhood; he is similar to the character Bhima from the ancient Hindu epic Mahabharata. Sekar challenges Periyavar’s group and puts Chinna on top.Actors

A handicapped Krishna (Suriya) arrives at Mumbai. He, along with a taxi driver (Soori) travel along Mumbai to look for his brother. He then meets a close friend of Raju and tells Krishna that Raju is Raju Bhai (Suriya). He then meets JK and he tells his experience with Raju Bhai and tells him that Raju could have killed him but spared JK. Krishna finally meets Karim Bhai (Joe Malloori) and he tells Krishna that Raju and Chandru (Vidyut Jamwal) were inseparable friends and were growing dons as they emerging in the underworld their enemies too grows. Then a new Commissioner plans to clean the city and kills a few people of Raju's gang. Raju then retaliates this by kidnapping the Commissioner's daughter Jeeva (Samantha) and keeps her as a hostage for a day and when Raju goes to leave her back she tells that she actually doesn't want to go and doesn't want to marry because she didn't love anyone. Both of them then develop love. Things go well until Raju and Chandru invoke the wrath of Imran Bhai (Manoj Bajpai) who is a bigger and more powerful don than them and Chandru keeps chanting what Imran says to him that Imran would 'shoot them like pigs'. Raju then gives Chandru a surprise by capturing Imran. Chandru becomes thrilled about it and gives Raju a surprise by getting him a new car. Raju then meets Jeeva inside. Chandru tells him that he had given Raju a surprise and tells him to stay away for seven days with Jeeva. Raju and Jeeva have a blast. When Raju comes back he sees Chandru murdered in a ghastly manner. A frustrated Raju goes in search of the killers is also shot by his own man, Amar. Krishna then becomes worried. At that very time Amar gets to know that Krishna was looking for him and tries to kill Krishna. Then it is revealed that Krishna is Raju. Raju then fights them and kills Amar. He then goes to find Jackie in a horse race. Jackie tells him to ask Johny. Raju then finds Johny in a shopping mall and Johny tells him that they along with Imran had plotted to kill Chandru when Raju was away. A disappointed Raju kills Johny. Raju then kills one more betrayer in a fight and shoots him. Then Imran's men kidnap Karim Bhai's daughter. When Raju gets there Karim tells him it wasn't his daughter, it was Jeeva. Raju finally battles them and at last kills Imran Bhai. Raju, after rescuing Jeeva, reunites with her and happily leave Mumbai.

Velu as Ghilli (Vijay), is a wannabe kabbadi champion who is the son of Assistant Commissioner of Police Sivasubramanian (Ashish Vidyarthi). Sivasubramanian is not fond of his son, constantly chiding him for his lack of interest in studies and his love for kabaddi. The film's plot revolves around Kanthaswamy (Vikram), who is an Income Tax officer in the CBI, and his friends, granting the wishes of the needy who write letters to a local Lord Muruga temple by disguising himself as an anthropomorphic rooster. During a CBI income tax raid, he discovers a stash of black money owned by Ponnusamy (Ashish Vidyarthi), a rich and corrupted entrepreneur. Ponnusamy pretends to be paralysed to escape the questioning. Angered by the news that her father is paralysed, Ponnusamy's daughter, Subbulakshmi (Shriya Saran) goes after Kanthaswamy to seek revenge by pretending to be in love with him. Kanthaswamy, knowing Subbulakshmi's real intentions plays along in the game. This forms a cat and mouse chase between the two. In a comical role, Thengakadai Thenappan (Vadivelu) is also sought after by a local police inspector who tries to solve the mystery of "Lord Muruga saving the people". The fate of Kanthaswamy's disguise leads into the climax of the story. The local police inspector was able to bring out the truth that a CBI is involved in the role behind the secret work of helping the needy people although he was not able to confirm it. Kanthaswamy finds the password of Subbulakshmi's family bank account, in which the black money is illegally saved. He tricks Subbulakshmi into revealing the password and answers for the security questions indirectly. Kanthaswamy finally transfers the money to his account which would be used for helping the poor and needy people. Ironically, in the end, Subbulakshmi's father was paralysed at the end knowing that the password which was used by him to access his black money was changed. After that Subbulakshmi and Kanthaswamy were married and were living in northern India. Kanthaswamy saw some letters tied to a tree, just like the ones at the Lord Muruga temple. He reads one and puts it into his pocket with a secret smile, which meant he will pursue being the anthropomorphic rooster again.

Ramanujam Iyengar, also known as Ambi, is an orthodox Brahmin and a straightforward consumer protection advocate living in Chennai. Maharashtra Police seizes a large quantity of arms from a house in the communal riot torn town of Chandangarh. The house belongs to Dr. Iqbal Ansari (Atul Kulkarni), a Muslim doctor. The police conclude that he is an agent for ISI, and is responsible for engineering the riots. Ansari is arrested as per Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 and is set to be presented before a special court in Mumbai. However, the convoy of police vehicles transporting Ansari from Chandangarh is ambushed by an unknown group. The police team somehow manages to secure him, but suffers heavy casualties. The unknown group, presumed to be terrorists, seems determined to free Ansari from the government's custody.

In 1995, during the Kashmir conflict, Hilaal Meer, a doctor, agrees to perform an appendectomy on the leader of a pro-separatist group. To avoid detection, he performs the surgery at his house, much to the chagrin of his wife Ghazala, who questions his allegiance. The following day, during a military raid, Hilaal is accused of harbouring terrorists. A shootout ensues at his home, during which the leader of the separatist group is killed and Hilaal is taken away for questioning. The doctor's house is bombed subsequently to kill any other militant hiding inside. Several days later, Hilaal and Ghazala's son, Haider, returns from his university to seek answers about his father's disappearance. Upon arrival, he is shocked to find his mother singing and laughing along with her brother-in-law, Khurram. Unable to understand his mother's behaviour, he begins searching for his father in various police stations and detention camps with the help of his fiancee Arshia, a journalist.

Govindan (Manivannan) is a thief who has two children: Aadhi (Pasupathy) and Arivumathi (Vikram). Years go by and the two, Aadhi and Madhi, decide to stop stealing and mend their ways and lead a hardworking life along with their father. They migrate to neighboring village and meet a retired agricultural officer, Chidambaram (Vijayakumar) who is in deep debt and is under pressure from the village's landlord, Kalingarayar (Murali) to clear his debts. In efforts to help Chidambaran, Mathi confronts Seetha Lakshmi (Asin), Kalingarayar's daughter, who comes to collect the money Chidambaram owes her father. Seetha Lakshmi starts to acquire a liking for Mathi but keeps it hidden due to her father's atrocious temper. In an attempt to teach Kalingarayar a lesson, Mathi forcibly ties the mangalsutram around Seetha's neck. Kalingarayar, realizing his daughter's love for Mathi, comes down to arrange a grand remarriage between the two. But things go awry when Manicka Vel (Biju Menon), Seetha Lakshmi's maternal uncle, comes to town in an effort to stop the wedding between the two as he has plans of marrying her and wiping her family fortune.

The city of Chennai is rife with the nefarious activities of land mafia. Inba (Madhavan) grew up to be a goon, as his brother had left him to fend for himself and he had no option of earning. He loves, marries, and abuses his wife, Sashi (Meera Jasmine). Suddenly, Michael is shot but Arjun saves him. After talking to Michael, Arjun changes his mind and wants to be a politician. Selvanayagam is worried when he hears news of students standing in the election. He uses every possible resource to get them out of Politics. Firstly he provides scholarship to study at a prestigious foreign university to Michael. When Michael refuses the bribe, he orders his goon Inba to take control. Inba beats some students but faces very strong retaliation from Michael and other students. He kidnaps Arjun and other candidates. However, they manage to escape with the help of Inba's ally, Dilli (Sriman). Inba follows Arjun and beats him up. While running, Arjun manages to call Michael for help. He comes to rescue Arjun at Napier Bridge. Then Inba is handed to the police. Michael wins the four seats he and his college mates have contested for. Sashi leaves for her hometown while Inba remains in prison hoping not to get the capital punishment. Michael, Arjun and two friends enter into politics.
