Black Friday is a 1940 American science fiction film starring Boris Karloff. Béla Lugosi, although second-billed, has only a small part in the film and does not appear with Karloff.
Writer Curt Siodmak would revisit this theme again in "Donovan's Brain" and "Hauser's Memory"

Synopsis

The famous Dr. Ernest Sovac's best friend, bookish college professor George Kingsley, is run down while crossing a street. In order to save his friend's life, Sovac implants part of another man's brain into the professor's. Unfortunately, the other man was a gangster who was involved in the accident. The professor recovers but at times behaves like the gangster, and his whole personality changes. Sovac is horrified but also intrigued, because the gangster has hidden $500,000 somewhere in the city. The doctor continues to treat his friend and, when the professor is under the influence of the gangster's brain, Karloff attempts to have the man lead him to the fortune. Béla Lugosi plays a gangster also trying to get his hands on the cash.

A visionary doctor, Dr. Janos Rukh (Boris Karloff) invents a telescope that can look far out into space — into the Andromeda Galaxy — and pick up rays of light that will show the Earth's past. Amazed by the demonstration, the group invites Rukh to go on an expedition to find the meteor that appeared to land in Africa. While in Africa, Rukh finds the meteor but is exposed to strong radiation ("Radium X") from the rock, which makes his touch death on the spot. Dr. Benet (Bela Lugosi) develops a serum that holds this effect at bay and takes a piece of the stone back to Europe and uses it to heal people, including curing the blind. Bill Whitlock has been temporarily promoted from guard to warden at the state penetentiary when he is cruelly informed by the prison board that he is to be demoted. Meanwhile, mechanic Jimmy Hutchins becomes unwittingly involved in a jailbreak when Jack Lang, a confederate of convicts Chuck Burkhart and Buzz Miller, instructs the unsuspecting Jimmy to meet him in the country so that he can show the plans to Jimmy's new motor to some friends. Inside the prison, Burkhart and Miller take Bill hostage and then force Jimmy to drive the getaway car. During the chase, a motorcycle officer is killed, and the escape car runs off the road. Bill shoots the fleeing Burkhart and confiscates the bag of stolen money he finds in the dead man's possession. Embittered by his demotion, Bill decides to keep the booty, while Jimmy is charged with murder. The boy protests his innocence, claiming as his alibi the plans that he was to show Lang, but at the trial, Lang denies his involvement with Jimmy and the boy is sentenced to hang. After the boy's sentencing, Bill discovers Jimmy's plans in the bag with the stolen money, thus thrusting him into a moral dilemma when Jimmy's appeal is denied. After Lang visits Jimmy and tells him about Burkhart's loot, Jimmy accuses Bill of stealing the money and joins in a prison break with Dippy, the prison trustee. As Dippy and Jimmy speed into a police trap, Bill comes to their aid, only to be shot by Dippy. Erique Claudin (Claude Rains) had been a violinist at the Paris Opera House for twenty years. However he has been losing the use of the fingers of his left hand, which affects his violin-playing. He is dismissed because of this, the conductor of the opera house assuming that he has enough money to support himself. This is not the case however, for Claudin has spent it all by anonymously funding the music lessons of Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster), a young soprano whom Claudin has secretly fallen in love with. In a desperate attempt to gain money, Claudin tries to get a concerto he has written published. After submitting it and not hearing a response, he becomes worried and returns to the publishers, Maurice Pleyel & Georgette Desjardins, to ask about it. No one there knows what happened to it, and do not seem to care. Claudin persists, but Pleyel rudely tells him to leave and goes back to the etchings he was working on.

Chuck Murray (Bud Abbott) and Ferdie Jones (Lou Costello), gas station attendants, aspire to better jobs waiting tables at Chez Glamour, a high-class nightclub, where Ted Lewis and The Andrews Sisters perform. However, Chuck and Ferdie cause a ruckus and wind up back at the gas station. Gangster "Moose" Mattson (William B. Davidson) brings his car in for servicing, and Chuck and Ferdie are caught inside the vehicle when the gangster speeds off to escape the police. During the chase shots are exchanged, and the gangster is killed by gunfire. However, through a strange clause in his will--which says that whoever is with him when he dies will get whatever he owns--Chuck and Ferdie inherit his rural tavern, the Forrester's Club. Mattson had also given a cryptic clue about a hidden stash of money, stating that he always kept it "in his head," but its existence and location remain a mystery.
