Bob and the Monster is a 2011 documentary film by Keirda Bahruth which profiles musician and drug counselor Bob Forrest.

Synopsis

This documentary film follows outspoken indie-rock hero Bob Forrest, through his life-threatening struggle with addiction, to his transformation into one of the most influential and controversial drug counselors in the US today. Bob and the Monster crafts contemporary footage, animation and compelling interviews with archival performances and personal videos from Bob's past to reveal the complex layers of this troubled, but hopeful soul. Testimony from his peers, including John Frusciante, Flea, Anthony Kiedis, Steven Adler and Courtney Love add texture, but it's the depth of Bob's music, interwoven throughout the film, that illuminates this unforgettable and inspirational story.

A group of Baker fans, ranging from ex-associates to ex-wives and children, talk about the man. Weber’s film traces the man’s career from the 1950s, playing with jazz greats like Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, and Russ Freeman, to the 1980s, when his heroin addiction and domestic indifference kept him in Europe. The film begins with discussion amidst Hole's 1994 and 1995 world tour, then works backwards to Schemel's childhood growing up in Marysville, Washington, and details her coming out to her family as a lesbian, as well as her immersion in Seattle's music scenes, where she would eventually cross paths with Kurt Cobain. Through contemporary interviews with Schemel's bandmates Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, and Melissa Auf der Maur, her beginnings in Hole are detailed, including her audition with Love and Erlandson in Los Angeles amidst the Rodney King riots, as well as her time living with Love and husband Kurt Cobain, and the songwriting process between Love, Schemel, and Erlandson. Additional commentary from fellow female drummers, musicians, peers, and friends of Schemel's are provided throughout. After the death of Hole's bassist Kristen Pfaff in 1994 (only two months after the suicide of Kurt Cobain), the band embarked on a world tour with Auf der Maur as Pfaff's replacement, and Schemel, along with Love, began heavily using heroin. Schemel's drug use leads to a breakup with her girlfriend, who acted as Love's personal assistant on the tour, and Schemel reflects on her time in a rehabilitation facility she checked into with Love after the conclusion of the tour in 1995.

After Don Cobain marries Wendy O'Conner, she gets pregnant and gives birth to their son Kurt Cobain. He is a hyperactive kid and at the age of three, his sister Kim is born. At the age of nine his parents divorce and he goes to stay with his dad. Don tells Kurt that he wouldn't get married again, but breaks his promise when he meets Jenny Westeby who already has two kids. They get married and have another kid Chad. Kurt tortures his siblings and Jenny has Don kick him out. Kurt goes to stay with his mom and his sister. He starts hanging out with a few kids he hates but hangs out with them so he can smoke marijuana. They go over to a girls house where they distract her and one of them grabs alcohol from the basement. They get away with this for only a month, and during that month Kurt gets suicidal. He decides that before he kills himself he wants to have sex first. He goes over to the girls house and when they are about to have sex, he leaves after being grossed out by how her vagina smelled. After a conversation with Buzz Osborne, he starts listening to punk rock. Two weeks before school gets out, he drops out due to lack of credits. He decides to make a band and meets Krist Novoselic. They form their band with Chad Channing on drums. After going through many names, they call the band Nirvana.
