Brilliant Lies is an Australian film that was released in 1996, produced by Bayside Pictures and Beyond Films. It stars Gia Carides and Anthony LaPaglia. It was directed by Richard Franklin and produced by Sue Farrelly, Kim McKillop and Richard Franklin. It was written by Peter Fitzpatrick and Richard Franklin, based on a play by David Williamson.

Nerida Tyson-Chew composed the music score, the second time she had composed for a film directed by Richard Franklin (after Hotel Sorrento).

The film was an adaptation of David Williamson's play of the same name, published by Currency Press in 1993.

The theme song is included on Kate Ceberano's 1996 album Blue Box.

Architect Leo Waters' life is in trouble and in order to have some sense of control, he attempts to lord over the other members of his family. Ezra (Sohrab Modi) is a jeweller who has a son called Elijah. He also has a friendly butler/child minder called Emmanuel. In the beginning, Ezra is due to leave. As he does, Elijah becomes upset and stands at the balcony. In the roads of the Jewish area, Brutus (Nazir Hussain), Governor of Rome, is passing, making an announcement. Watching over the balcony, is Elijah. A stone slips from his hand and hits Brutus on the head. Brutus immediately gets Elijah arrested, and as Elijah is a Jew, sentences him to death. Hearing this, Ezra rapidly returns from his trip and arrives at the doorstep of Brutus. He begs Brutus to free Elijah but Brutus feeds Elijah to hungry lions. Ezra sadly returns to his house. In revenge, Emmanuel kidnaps Lydia, motherless daughter of Brutus, and takes her to Ezra. Ezra declines to kill Lydia and adopts the child.

Phil (D'Onofrio), James (Kinney), George (Shalhoub), and Tom (Sinise) meet 20 years after their championship high school game at a special reunion at their high school. Afterwards, they decide to visit the home of their old coach (Sorvino). While at first it seems they are all having a few harmless drinks, the night soon takes a violent turn as several things are realized; Phil is having an affair with George's wife, George (who is running for Mayor) is firing James, who is his campaign chairman, and Tom has become a reeling drunk. With the help of their old Coach, the men try to put their lives back together—but the Coach proves to be nothing they believed him to have been, and worse than no help; in fact, his involvement with each of the men's lives proves to have done them all much more harm than good. This is particularly glaring because of the refusal of the star player, who still hates the Coach after all these years, to attend the reunion.

Dans une école d'art dramatique, au début du XX siècle, le metteur en scène Shimamura a pour objectif d'élargir son répertoire au théâtre étranger contemporain et de ne plus se cantonner aux seules représentations kabuki. À cette fin, il est autorisé à monter Maison de poupée d'Henrik Ibsen. Mais il recherche une actrice locale digne d'interpréter le rôle principal de Nora. La rencontre avec la comédienne Sumako Matsui est décisive. Celle-ci, deux fois malheureuse en amour et proche d'un état suicidaire, veut s'émanciper pleinement, à la fois comme femme et comme actrice. La pièce d'Ibsen entre donc en résonance avec sa vie et son idéal. De son côté, Shimamura, en homme de son temps, estime, par exemple, que sa fille doit choisir par elle-même l'amour et l'homme qui lui conviennent. Il refuse d'émettre le moindre avis à ce sujet, ni même de rencontrer l'éventuel mari. Sur le plan strictement professionnel, Sumako et Shimamura sont, tous deux, des perfectionnistes. L'osmose est donc totale : elle aboutira à une vie de couple et à la fondation d'un Théâtre d'Art moderne.
